IKEA to Nashville

I have shopped at IKEA since they opened their 2nd store in suburbs of DC in Virginia back in the  mid1980s.  What I buy there has changed over the years.  When I got my first apartment I did buy a lot of ready to assemble furniture there and I still have my little loveseat  and my contemporary chair  (both in my bonus room now)  I have seen their furniture change over the years and it is now much better built unless the cheapest they sell. They have a lot more upmarket items now and are big in whole kitchen renovations now.  

What I do buy there is from their Marketplace area.  Pots, pans, silverware etc and you can unique kitchen items.  Their live and fake plants are incredible and great prices. But all of it has gotten more expensive over the years.  My cousin who comes lives in Raleigh  always likes to browse but she even said their prices are about the same at Homegoods, Ross and TJ Maxx.  Their kids furniture and section is great too especially since the kids will outgrow the beds and accessories.  It is still fun to go their stores and because of the crowds it is best to avoid on the weekends (especially at the Charlotte store) But over the years they have really adapted their products to the American taste which is different that Euros or Asians.    IKEA is ideal for all these small apartments they are building in Nashville and other major cities in the country.    They have little showrooms on how you can live 200 sq ft and larger.    IKEA is great for storage items too.   

Like I said they should come to Nashville and Raleigh as their first stores announced since they were committed to both before they went a different direction and both markets are now even more great locations for IKEA.

I think Nashville would still be a pretty strong market for IKEA. 3 hours is a bit too far of a drive to go to one, although I've gone to Memphis and Atlanta just to go there before. I'm wondering where it would go should they choose Nashville. Is Tanger Outlets going to take up all of the available space where the orginal plan for the Ikea was? I think inside of Davidson County would be ideal, but I could see this pop up somewhere in Williamson, Rutherford or Wilson Co, possibly around the 840 corridor due to availability of space. Am I going to be upset if they don't come? Nah, but more options never hurt.

My guess for the first 8 cities is below. These cities currently have isolated pick up points either in or nearby to the city. As far as where the other 9 locations could go, they could shoot for smaller markets like Des Moines, Omaha, Boise, New Orleans, Oklahoma City, and maybe add some stores in markets where they already have stores. Those ae my guesses though. From the marketer that I am not.

1) Nashville, TN

2) Charleston, SC

3) Raleigh-Durham, NC

Although I feel that Nashville is in the running for a IKEA, I have a feeling it won’t be in Davidson. Likely in Williamson or Wilson with a possibility in Murfreesboro.

I still think Century Farms is the best location as it is convenient for Davidson and Rutherford County residents and not too far a drive from Williamson County.

IKEA already has a store in Pittsburgh.

Since the IKEA spokesperson in the article specifically mentioned the underserved South, I could see stores in Nashville, Raleigh, Jacksonville, and Richmond.  Frankly, I don't care where IKEA puts their stores as long as one of them is in Nashville.

Jacksonville has one already.  I doubt on Richmond as it is between their Dale City VA (northern VA) and their Norfolk stores less than 2 hours to either.   Raleigh Durham yes, Nashville yes and maybe another Texas store.   Florida is pretty well covered now.

ugh I completely forgot about the stores in Jacksonville and Norfolk, thanks for setting me straight.  IKEA has two stores in metro DC (College Park MD and Woodbridge VA, plus another one in Baltimore) so maybe they'll put an additional location in Miami/South Florida?   Or another one in Atlanta that's more convenient to Atlanta's northern burbs?   At any rate, I think Nashville and Raleigh are shoe-ins.  I do hope the one in Nashville will be in Davidson County.

The spot where Ikea was going to be built is still empty.  It's the northwest corner of the Hickory Hollow exit.  I did notice while driving down to Murfreesboro last week that that land is being leveled which I thought was interesting.  

My guess is Ikea would not build a store in Williamson County because of land value.  Their sites are huge!

If the land is now taken in Century Farms,  I think traveling out I40 East would be where they would consider maybe into Wilson County.  Also the Northwest corner of Rutherford County.  

The 3 Stores Ikea cancelled in 2018 were Nashville, Cary (Raleigh), North Carolina and Glendale, Arizona.

I just ordered a massive piece of furniture from IKEA (650 pounds) and had it delivered to the IKEA delivery point on Spence Lane.  It cost only $30 (would've cost nearly $400 to have it delivered to my house).  It was super convenient, and the friendly IKEA guy helped load everything into my truck.  I highly recommend that service.  While I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that Nashville will get a real IKEA in the very near future, this is a really handy option in the meantime and surprisingly affordable.  I mean, I would've spent much more than $30 just on gas to go to Atlanta or Memphis to pick it up in person.

Omg, who else just got excited seeing this thread trend thinking there was IKEA movement to Nashville?  Great to hear @jmtunafish and I've considered pickup as well. I particularly like seeing certain items in person before purchase, so having a local store would be a HUGE plus but the local pickup is a great option.

We just did a basement renovation that included installing a drybar and we considered the Ikea drop point for the cabinetry. Unfortunately it is only for specific items that does not include cabinets *sigh*. Ikea's cabinets were actually surprisingly hard to source and I was shocked when they did not offer drop off point service even though their cabinets are flat packed and would've needed to be assembled. Maybe one day we will get an Ikea, until then I would actually recommend Super Home Surplus in Madison for anyone looking for cabinets.

That's odd and is really too bad.  They delivered my gigantic 10-foot wardrobe but they don't deliver kitchen cabinets?  I don't understand the rationale behind that.  My wardrobe came in 18 boxes, each of them very flat.  I was able to fit all 18 boxes in the bed of a pickup truck and could've fit them in a station wagon if I had to.  Here's hoping IKEA will hurry up with their Nashville store.

I've used the Nashville Pick Up  location and had a great experience!

Ikea made their expansion announcement back in April. 

I was expecting location announcements this mid summer.  

If Nashville is on the expansion list, what part of town would you guess for a new location?  

I'm thinking the northern or eastern part of the city. 

It looks like the Century Farms site (where they were going to build) has been taken.

Knock down the rivergate mall and put it in there. That’s one area of town that needs new life pumped into it.

I could see that but honestly I could see it in Mt. Juliet somewhere. There are a lot of new nice shopping centers around there, it’d be close to the airport, and it’d be on the side of Nashville closest to Knoxville, which would make coming to IKEA from UTK  much more convenient.

Kinda my thought also, somewhere in Wilson Or Rutherford Counties. Lots of available options on major interstates, close to Nashville but easily accessible from the eastern populace of the state. Memphis geographically takes care of everything west of Nashville.

I would be surprised if the developer of the Costco in Mt Juliet isn't already courting IKEA.  Adjacent to Costco would be a perfect location.

I could also see the city of Nashville trying to get IKEA to demo part of the old Hickory Hollow Mall (or whatever it's called now) to build a store there.  Selfishly, I'd rather see one in MJ, but I'd gladly go to Hickory Hollow if it ended up there.

I just redid my home office with all IKEA furniture, except for my great-grandfather's desk.  Solid wood bookshelves, a comfortable office chair, stylish storage boxes, and a snappy rug which all came in at less than half the price of an average Nashville apartment's rent for a month.  I had to pick it up ($30 from the Spence Lane pick up point) but it all fit in the back of my Hyundai Tucson, and it took all of just one weekend to get everything assembled.  It's much, much sturdier than any Walmart of Target knock-offs and a lot better looking.
