Charlotte-Douglas Airport (CLT) Expansion

A Block and Grinder would be an awesome replacement for Chili's Too for the airport Atrium. My previous post was a little tongue in cheek....as I never ate at that Chili's....locals know to go directly to Bad Daddy's on Concourse C to grab a bite.

Not whats coming to replace. It will be "1897 Market." The new restaurant will include several different types of cuisine and food stations.

Those will likely include a raw bar with oysters, shrimp and seafood, a grill with burgers, sandwiches and entrees, pizza and pasta, and salads. The 1897 Market will also have a “grab and go” beverage component.

Apparently the A350s will NOT be used from CLT when they arrive on AA property in 2017. However I have heard the refitted 777-200s may be used on routes, such as LHR and FRA.

Interesting considering the A350's are a legacy USAir order.  So the A350's will replace the 763's and some 772's that AA currently deploy from their legacy hubs?

Jen picking up on the story for Biz Journal instead of Will. Maybe he divulged his sources ;)

I have to ask since this type thing is almost continuously posted...do you really think that a reporter sees info on UrbanPlanet and then turns around and writes a story for their site?

They do look at UP, in fact, we got a shout out last week in one Observer blog post.

But then they do the work of tapping their additional sources and writing cohesive articles on the matter rather than one liners.  :)

It's symbiotic. I am glad we are a serious forum with real input and comments to be worthy of being watched by journalists and industry insiders.

Ely posted a "2025 vision" for the airport per a meeting tonight with CLT airport officials. Concourse "A" looks like it's taking on a life of its own with the upcoming "Annex concourse" that will go where the old rental car facility is now.

I'm glad to see that the plans for the old rental car land are starting to be more solidly connected to Terminal A.  I never liked that elbow macaroni connector they used to have in the master plan.

The design work for Concourse A Annex or North will begin soon. However you will see activity at the site in about a month or so when the rental cars move to the Hourly Parking Deck. They will level all the current rental car buildings and then do underground tank removal and soil remediation and any environmental cleanup that has to happen. Then they will grade the area and put in a new concrete apron. So construction on the actual A Concourse Annex North will start in about 16 months.

Yesterday was the end of an era, the last 767-200 flight for USAir and of any domestic airline:

The combined AA also released its 2015 Fleet Plan:

I would encourage anyone interested in the future plans of CLT to watch the presentation to the City Council on Feb 9th which is linked below.  The CLT presentation starts at the 36 minute mark and lasts for over an hour.  They discuss the 4th parallel runway and how it requires that West Blvd be moved, a possible 5th parallel runway, and all the proposed gates.

Also CLT is redoing their noise exposure maps and there are some interesting slides at the website linked below.

This slide shows the expected fleet mix in 2015 and 2020.

This slide shows how the current runways are used.

What I found interesting about the presentation to City Council are the projected growth rates for CLT.  They expect a constant growth rate overall and an even higher international growth rate even though total aircraft movements declined in 2014 and are probably going to decline in 2015 due to AA's realignments.

For those of you in the industry who post here, will CLT really have more international passengers in 2015?  I thought AA reduced the international flights at CLT.

Hello everybody, got some new exciting updates and rumours:

-AA may temporarily resume CLT-GIG (and DFW-GIG) in the summer of 2016 for the Olympics and Paralympics in Rio, see how well the route performs and decide whether to run the route seasonality

-International cross-fleeting for AA might begin as early as winter this year and LHR & FRA are definite candidates for refurbished 777-200s

-We probably won't be getting any gastly, old AA 767s on international routes as there are all going to be retired in five years and the cost of training the LUS crews might not be worth it

-Dublin could be going year-round if Aer Lingus takes IAG's offer and joins oneWorld and the TATL joint venture

-Madrid may also go year-round if the route perform well with the A330 this summer

Now this one is massive and if it doesn't happen I apologise for spreading this, but I have heard:

-Qatar Airways is in talks with the airport and may launch service as early as June or July

EDIT: I need to check my spelling before posting, was a long night on the flight to Heathrow.

What would be the potential destination(s) from CLT?

For those of you in the industry who post here, will CLT really have more international passengers in 2015?  I thought AA reduced the international flights at CLT.

All European-bound traffic for 2015 is now on far larger aircraft types.  The 767 and 757 will no longer fly from Charlotte to Europe (or South America, if service resumes there); they have all been replaced with the A330-200 and -300, which hold more passengers.  As an example, last year, the airline flew a 757-200 that holds 176 seats to Dublin, but this year it will be replaced with an A-330-200 which holds 258. Madrid will go from having 202 daily seats to 258. Also, last month, AA President Scott Kirby said to expect some expanded service to the Caribbean and Central America from CLT.  I'm thinking it will be the resumption of service to Guatemala City and maybe a non-stop to Curacao and Panama City, Panama.

Sign me up Qatar. Lets turn my October trip to Bangkok into only a 1 stop endeavor rather than 2/3.

Flew to BKK on Qatar last August and loved it. I don't recommend Doha in August.

If they launch service in June or July I'll be praying they also launch service to Myanmar from DOH. I'll take another trip to India or Vietnam on one of their cheap flights to that side of the world. Their air service is amazing and it would be amazing to have them in the southeast. Even Emirates isn't in ATL.
