Business 40 through downtown W-S to reopen this weekend:

It's a shame that the freeway wasn't removed entirely and replaced with a surface boulevard. Perhaps if this project was only in the planning stages now, there might have been a chance - attitudes towards urban freeways seem to be changing quickly. But now that this investment has been made, the gash in Winston-Salem's urban fabric seems destined to remain for another generation.

One of Charlotte's best chicken sandwich joints is coming near downtown WS   Jim Noble's Bossy Beulah's.   Believe me you will love it.

""Chef Jim Noble is partnering with Durban Development of Charlotte to open their second Bossy Beulah's Chicken Shack in the former First Street Draught House at 1500 W. 1st St. The fast-casual restaurant specializes in chicken sandwiches, and also serves beer and wine. Noble and Collin Hicks, Durban's co-founder, told Triad Business Journal that they expect the restaurant to open in the next five or six months. Noble said the restaurant would seat between 40-60, split about evenly between inside and outdoor tables. The restaurant will also offer takeout and third-party delivery.""   from the Triad Biz Journal

sounds like some changes are coming to the original Wachovia Bank HQ in downtown Winston and this developer has a great track record having renovated the original RJ Reyonlds building into the Kimpton Hotel and apartments.

Sad to see the 'Winston Tower' lettering go though. That's a really iconic building for W-S, and I having a Truliant cap just doesn't  feel right.

The food hall is only half open right now. They have an Asian Fare place opening I'm a few weeks. Around the same time, they should be able to announce the other two spots.

I don't live there and only visited 1 or 2x a year but it is fairly vibrant.  Lots of renovations and some new builds.  the Innovation district is quite busy.

I would suggest you visit and walk around their downtown.

Winston-Salem has always been a interesting city in my eyes.  It has the grittiness of a Northeast/Midwest  industrial city with a plethora of architecturally  significant buildings still intact and in use as well.  So glad to see the Pepper Building under renovation.  The former RJ Reynolds HQ is now a hotel/apartment complex and the  Nissan Building which was once the tallest in the Southeast back in the early 20th century is a upscale apartment complex.  And you can not speak but positive on the continuous rehabilitation of the sprawling RJR factory complex which is now the Innovation District.

I worked there a few days a week many years ago while I was living in Charlotte.  It's pretty close to Chapel Hill, and yet, I haven't been there in years.  I'll go there some day soon and post some photos.

Have at least five new buildings been built in DT W-S in the past few years?  If so, can someone provide a list.  I haven't been to WS in years.

As noted above, the main projects in the past few years have been the Bailey Power Plant renovation/addition, the Link apartments a block north of that, the Hampton Inn on Cherry St, and the apartments at 1st/2nd/Broad St near Truist Stadium (edge of downtown).  I think a new parking deck on Main at 3rd as well.  There were some other projects that had broken ground prior to Covid, but not sure of their status now.  There was something started on the south part of the block that holds 500 West 5th, and there was supposed to be some luxury apartments or something called Mayfair on 4th which would connect with the Hotel Indigo, but I think that project might have stalled.  There was also supposed to be something across the street from that on the 3rd St side, but not sure what or how far along it is.  I briefly drove through WS a month or so ago on my way back to Charlotte, but it was dark so kinda hard to tell what was going on.

Thanks.  I should visit WS some day.   I've always liked it.  Frankly, Raleigh has never impressed me, but WS has an interesting charm.

I was there today.  Here are some photos of downtown lots of new apartments going up in and near downtown, renovations.     Love all the renovated older higher rises.  Always a stop inside the Kimpton Cardinal the old RJR HQ building the model for its bigger brother up north called the Empire State Building in NYC.   from wikipedia:  ""The building is well known for being a design inspiration for the much larger Empire State Building that was built in 1931 in New York City.[8] There is a legend (not a legend it happens)  that every year the staff of the Empire State Building sends a Father's Day card to the staff at the Reynolds Building in Winston-Salem to pay homage to its role as predecessor to the Empire State Building.[5][9] It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.""

West 4th St has lots of restaurants and bars and renovated high rises into hotels, office buildings and apartments.

New kids museum will relocated I am guessing to downtown Winston called Kaleideum.

If you have NOT been to NC cities without a trip to Winston Salem.
