As for plants in Romare wilting, are there not landscapers/groundskeepers to maintain watering? Or is it a special last-resort-type scenario for that?

Well they've been trying a whole variety of flowers and just trial and error-ing what looks great and is unusual for the area, but also will survive naturally

Coming from Canada, I'm all too familiar with the bouts of a depression a long, brutal winter can bring upon people.

But this summer has just been the worst. If I never see another day in the 90's for the rest of my life, I'll be a happy man.

Panovich says we are on pace for the second hottest August ever.  5.3 degrees above average.  FML.

The humidity's been ridiculous as well. I can't recall ever seeing a summer this humid before. I've lived in NC for over two decades and this is the first time I've ever looked forward to the end of summer.

Same.  I've been here since 96.  We've had some scorchers, but this had to be the worst I can remember in terms of my desire for relief.

Using data from wunderground*, here are the number of days with high temps of 90+ (hot) and average dewpoints of 70+ (humid):

2001    11
2002    16
2003    9
2004    9
2005    23
2006    14
2007    1
2008    4
2009    4
2010    33    (Jun=5, Jul=15, Aug=13)
2011    27    (Jun=2, Jul=18, Aug=7)
2012    20
2013    16
2014    6
2015    7
2016    26 so far    (Jun=1, Jul=9, Aug=16 so far)

Of note is the late heat/humidity this year, with more August occurrences than 2010 or 2011 already.  2010 and 2011 were brutal.  They had 87 and 73 days at 90+, compared to 60 so far this year.

*which is pretty good (it has actual CLT airport official readings) but doesn't always EXACTLY match the historical readings

wxbrad noted that if it got below 70 last night (which it did), that would be the first time in 30 days.

Going to my trusty wunderground archive, here are streaks of 10+ days where it never got below 70 degrees:

2002    14 days    Jul 24 - Aug 6
2005    13 days    Jul 11 - Jul 23
2005    11 days    Aug 12 - Aug 22
2010    16 days    Jul 16 - Jul 31
2010    15 days    Aug 8 - Aug 22
2012    11 days    Jul 18 - Jul 28
2012    11 days    Aug 28 - Sep 7
2016    30 days    Jul 24 - Aug 22

Now consider, lending credence to the recent posts here about the never-ending heat, in that 30-day streak we went 11 straight days (Aug 7 - Aug 17) where the temp never got below 74(!!), not even through several periods of rain and thunderstorms.

Sub-60 temps predicted for early next week.....maybe.

Similar to my previous post, according to wunderground.com, the last temp in the 50s in Charlotte was Jun 20.  That's 3 months now, or over 90 days.  Here are the top streaks the last 15 years:

Days    Year    Range
84    2001    5/30 - 8/22
82    2011    6/17 - 9/7

77    2008    7/2 - 9/17
76    2005    6/21 - 9/5
72    2014    6/3 - 8/14
71    2013    6/15 - 8/25
63    2010    7/4 - 9/5
61    2015    6/29 - 8/29
60    2009    7/4 - 9/2
59    2002    8/10 - 10/8
58    2012    6/28 - 8/25
55    2007    7/23 - 9/16
53    2002    6/16 - 8/8
41    2004    6/5 - 7/16
41    2004    8/8 - 9/18
35    2009    5/30 - 7/4
32    2008    5/30 - 7/1
30    2007    6/14 - 7/14

Note that 2002 had a 53-day streak followed by a 59-day streak, with 3 days in August that dipped into the 50s.  2004 had two different 41-day streaks, separated by 3 weeks.

Panovich pulled the all-time stats for me!  This streak of 91 days (currently and counting) is the 31st longest ever of Min Temp >= 60.  Oddly, none of those 90-plus-day streaks have happened since 1996.  The longest streak on record was 130 days in 1987, from May 15 to Sep 21!

11 straight days where the temp never got below 74?

11 exits on 74.

Silver line funding confirmed.

Have you guys been keeping up with Hurricane Matthew? I hope we don't get slammed too hard this weekend. They're already evacuating people from the coast in North and South Carolina.

Almost all forecasts show minimal impact to the Charlotte area - if it continues to move eastward in the Carolinas we might not even get rain. If it stays to the west we might get more wind than normal and we might get rain, but it won't be tropical storm force and our typical summer thunderstorm will probably have more intensity.

The coastal impact vs. our impact inland will be pretty different. This honestly might be the boost the hotel industry needs after the riots and HB2 cancellations. Hotels in the midlands of South Carolina are already full and some coastal residents will be evacuating to Charlotte. Do a quick search of hotels in Columbia tomorrow night... everything is sold out. In Greenville, only the expensive Hyatt Regency has rooms. On Expedia there are 550 people searching for rooms for tomorrow night in Charlotte right at this moment.

American Airlines and United Airlines have included Charlotte in their waiver so you can re-book travel this weekend. I was initially surprised as the hurricane's expected impact in Charlotte is minimal, however there will likely be delays at CLT even if they don't cancel flights due to the storm impacting aircraft routing on the East Coast and take-off / landings to/from the East. Also, many passengers might be calling to change their connections and not feel comfortable landing in North Carolina, even though the hurricane won't be effecting Charlotte too much.

Delta has NOT included Charlotte-Douglas in their waiver.

If your flying this weekend, you might want to check your flight status frequently. Miami is going to probably close for AA and cause ripple effects throughout their network as aircraft get moved to safety.

Was yesterday the last 80-degree day for the year?  Perhaps.  At Nov 3 that's already later than the average of the last 10 years.

Here's the first and last 80-degree day for the last 10 years:

2011 Feb-27 Oct-18
2012 Mar-1 Oct-24
2013 Apr-9 Oct-11
2014 Apr-1 Oct-28
2015 Mar-11 Oct-23
2016 Mar-11    Nov 3 ?

2006-2015:
Average Mar-19 Oct-28

Surprised more people aren't talking this up, these fires are horrendous and air continues to worsen. I'm in northeastern Gaston and there's a heavy haze of smog. Allergy symptoms everywhere. I've been watching coverage, they all talk about the Code Red air quality. The winds are supposed to change, but no one's forecasting anything about when we might have our atmospheric conditions in the Charlotte metro improve, or either I haven't happened to catch any broadcast that's dealing with that.

They also make it sound like the firefighters are in a losing battle... How much *federal* response has been mobilized, does anyone have that info?

Last I heard they've actually contained a good bit of it and have slowed it down. I think the Feds are already involved.

That said this is absolutely terrible

It reminds me a lot of when I was in Malaysia last year and the fires from northern Indonesia resulted in crazy smog. Our visibility isn't nearly as impacted as what I experienced there (could see maybe 3-4 blocks on the worst day) but I got the same degree of choking feeling when I stepped outside this morning, so that can't be good.

I'm really worried about Saturday. A front is coming through that will bring some pretty stiff winds. And, Sunday too. There's a small chance of rain with the passage, but doesn't look like enough to have any effect.

I was actually reading that wind could be a good thing. The issue is the air is so still and dry. They're saying we need rain and wind. But yeah i am a bit worried too. I have a friend in town and we need to be out drinking.

Wind is only good if it changes directions and starts blowing northward and pushed the fire backwards. But since this is a cold front, I am guessing the winds will continue to be pushing south and for the party rock fire, the homes are south of where the fire currently is burning.  Not sure about the South Mountain fire...don't think there are too many home south of where it currently is burning.
