Struggling to reach 40 today -- rare for March.

March highs of 42 or lower since 2001:

35 3/2/2009

36 3/3/2009

37 3/17/2005

37 3/1/2009

39 3/4/2002

40 3/2/2010

42 3/6/2001

42 3/14/2009

42 3/27/2011

If 19 holds up as our low this morning, that's also rare. Lows 21 and under since 2001:

16 3/3/2009

18 3/5/2002

21 3/3/2013

21 3/1/2002

21 3/4/2013

21 3/4/2005

... I decided to define "perfect weather" in terms of daily aggregate weather data, as found on wunderground.

These are all totally arbitrary, but I decided that the Perfect Day had:

High Temp 68-82

Avg Temp >= 60

Min Temp >=40

Max Dewpoint < 66

Avg Dewpoint < 60

No "weather" reported (rain, showers, t-storm, etc.)

CloudCover < 6 (this appears to be a number 1 to 10)

Avg WindSpeed < 9

With that criteria, Saturday (04/05) was our first Perfect Day of the year.

The first Perfect Day each year was:

2001 - 3/13

2002 - 1/29, then 3/25

2003 - 3/25

2004 - 3/26

2005 - 1/4, 1/9, 1/11 (wow!), then 3/13

2006 - 2/17, then 3/1

2007 - 3/11

2008 - 4/10

2009 - 3/7

2010 - 3/20

2011 - 2/18, 2/27, then 3/13

2012 - 3/20

2013 - 4/8

We average about 5 each for April and May. Bring it on.

After that freakish cold/wet weekend, I was looking at some April weather history for Charlotte.

Check out Apr 7-11 in 2003. From Monday morning to Friday mid-day, the temp was between 41 and 46.

Mon Apr 7 after 6am - Hi 46 Lo 43 (1.4 inches rain)

Tue Apr 8 - Hi 46 Lo 42 (0.6 inches rain)

Wed Apr 9 - Hi 46 Lo 41 (0.8 inches rain)

Thu Apr 10 - Hi 45 Lo 41 (2.1 inches rain)

Fri Apr 11 - Finally got above 46 at 1pm.

This link may or may not work for you, depending on your browser and firewall and whatnot:

Yesterday in the afternoon, the temp and dewpoint were 50 degrees apart (e.g. 77 temp and 27 dewpoint).  This is pretty rare in Charlotte, especially for a non-winter month.

Since 2001, there have only been 19 occurrences of the High Temp being 50+ degrees higher than the Min Dewpoint in April.  And only some fraction of those 19 would have had the 50-point spread at a given point in the day.  We've had 4 of those 19 this year.  In fact, on Apr 1 and 2 this year, when the high temp got to 82 and 86, we had current dewpoints that were 55 and 54 degrees lower than the current temp.

The really odd thing, though, is that yesterday started with fog and 100% humidity.  As such, it was only the 3rd time since 2001 (regardless of month) where the humidity was 100% and <= 15% at some point in the same day.

I was on the train (6:40 inbound), apparently paralleling the area of circulation as it went north.  Though not in any real danger, I can still do without that "excitement".

Brad Panovich (@wxbrad) was tweeting updates pretty much each radar scan, which was very helpful.  If you're on the twitter, you can go back and look at his tweets if you want to see the path and how it looked on radar.

Man, February sucked, didn't it?  But did you notice how AWESOME March and April were?  That was a really nice long Spring this year.  I pulled some stats for the last 5 years for comparison.

For coloring and counting, I made "Spring" any day with a high temp 65-79.  Obviously that's over-simplifying it, you can have some really nice spring days in the low 60s and low 80s, and you can have some washout wasted rainy days in the 65-79 range, but whatever.

This really shows how crappy February was, and how we flipped a switch for March.  Sure, there were still 11 days under 65 in March, but never more than 3 in a row.

I mean look at 3 of the last 4 years with 19, 22, and 20 days in March under 65.

2012 looks like it was pretty nice, too, with very few <65 days and the >=80 days look like they weren't really hot until late May other than a stretch in early May.  Spring that year was essentially March 7 to May 20 or 24, minus a week in early May.

Anyway, check it out:

^Looks like someone has had a little time on his hands.  ;)  March and April really were quite nice this year.  Holy cow, June of 2011 was a roaster!  If only Spring could last 365 days a year (minus the pollen)!  Thanks for putting that together.

In my records*, since 2001 there have been only 27 days in June with a 95+ high.  The longest streak is 7 days, Jun 22-28 2010.  We are currently at a 5-day streak with many more forecast -- we'll see if we actually hit it.

There were also only 4 days in June of 99+ (again since 2001), and we just did 4 in a row.

So yeah this is hot for June.

We are now at 8 straight days with 95+, with the next 5 in the forecast.

Panovich posted the all-time records....18 consec days in July 1986.  15 in July 1993.  3rd place is 11, which we will probably beat.  Longest in June was June 1998 at 10 days.
