I took both of these photos on September 14 one in 2017 and one today in 2023.   Just 6 years but many differences.

Photos from September 18 2018 just 5 years ago.  Look at that uptown shot there are 6 cranes in it.  Railyard underway.  So many changes in such a short time.   From the KJ archives.

There are VERY few places that can boast of that drastic of a change to an area in just five years.  This is just one (of many) reasons why I have chosen Charlotte as my home.  It has been an amazingly dynamic place to be for more than two decades and, for better or worse, it has been so exciting to witness the constant flow of change and improvements to the built environment.  I'm really glad that I've been able to first-hand witness Charlotte go from a mid size city with a skyline that was really trying its best all while constantly being mocked and ridiculed by outsiders to a truly large and much more urban feeling city with a skyline that now gets its fair share of praise.  And despite the uncertainty with lending, office needs, and construction in general we're not slowing down.

Like many others on here I've had friends and family visit and not a single one has returned home not being impressed or shocked at what they saw.  Pretty cool.

Was a busy last week and hadn’t had a chance to post these yet! The first batch of photos are from Merchant and Trade, and the second batch is from the Daniel Stowe botanical garden!

That stinks, but hopefully it'll be better integrated than TRUIST.  Couple things - I wonder if they'll just have it on that side since that side of the handle face is vertical.  The other side is angled, so not sure how signage on that side would work, unless they angle the backsides of the letters to match.  Also, the handle is lit from a row of LEDs along the bottom edge, so are the letters going to cast shadows above and ruin the entire lighting scheme?  Maybe they have some workaround...

While I would prefer less corporate branding cluttering up our skyline, I'm not too bothered about this one.  A company name would integrate fairly well with this building's modern aesthetic.  The surfaces are flat and pretty featureless so this shouldn't look nearly as offensive as Truist.

Concerns over signage on Charlotte buildings is nothing new, of course.  Over a century ago (c. 1907-09), the Selwyn Hotel and the Independence Trust Building (both demolished decades ago)  were built almost adjacent to each other on the first block of West Trade Street, between North Tryon and North Church Streets.  Independence Trust made it known that they wanted to install and illuminate the letters "IT" on top of their building.  The owner of the Selwyn Hotel responded that they would place a large "SH" on top of the hotel.

Needless to say, this never happened.  Was it ever seriously considered?  Doubtful.  But the story has been around for decades.

I actually don't think it is too bad and better than Truist name on a tower that had no real place to put it.

Actually as the largest bank employer in this region I am surprised that had not done it earlier.

If they angle the backside of the sign to keep it vertical on that one side, it will definitely wreck the pointed asethetic of the top of the building from the North-South vantage imo
