Here are the updated population estimates for the state. The top 3 in growth (in sheer numbers) are approximately

1. Horry - 11,000

2. Greenville - 10,000

3. York - 9,000

No real surprises here. Sptbg, Richland, and Lexington counties also record healthy gains, again no surprise.

Perhaps the only surprise is that Chas county gained only 2000.

At this point, it's pretty safe to say that York County is the 2nd largest county in the Charlotte metropolitan area.

I simply used the Census estimates for the counties included in each of our state's MSAs to calculate the new figures (the counties that make up each MSA recognized by the Census Bureau can be found here). I used Demographia.com to get the 2000 figures, then did the calculations of actual change and percentage change.

^Yeah, but you've got to take into account York's rapid growth rates for the past few years versus Gaston's slow rates and the fact that these estimates are for last year. That's why I said it's pretty safe to say it.

^The best way to do that would be to take advantage of its proximity to Columbia. I know the two cities are supposed to be working together to bring aviation-related industries to the area; that would be a good start.

Richland - 6413

Dorchester - 6195

Lexington - 5226

Spartanburg - 4323

Charleston - 2435

Wow! I thought Charleston County was growing faster than that.

That has to be an annual gain. Those things change from year to year. Take that witha grain of salt. Look that the big picture- the numbers krazee posted- and you get a better feel for things.

Greenville is a technological hot bed and it is and will continue to show. I still see Greenville-Spartanburg as one metro as I cross the county line several times a day and Greer is split between both. They will be one metro by the next census ringing in at well over 1+ million.

^ agreed. I just wonder to what extent the outlying counties will be included. In the past, Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, Cherokee, and Pickens have been the MSA. But now with Laurens, Union and Oconee being pulled into the fray, I think we could easily reunite the whole Upstate in one rediculously sprawling MSA and CSA.

Could be right Spartan. None of us really like sprawl, but we definetly love progress right? I love this state period.

I live in Anderson County and always come to greenville for work and shopping. So does about everyone else i know that lives in powdersville and piedmont. I think we should all be one MSA again.

I keep saying that Horry is going to be the big surprise in growth in the 2010 census. I think the growth projections for that place are way way under the mark. The level of the construction going on there reminds me of Charlotte.

^The new I-73 should definitely help in that regard, but other transportation alternatives need to be pursued, as well. Myrtle Beach's growth has been staggering since 2000; the MSA almost added as many people as Greenville, a much larger city/MSA.
