With all this on the horizon, is it feasible to expect the airport to some how get connected to the interstates better? Via some type of highway/freeway/express way, anyway that's better then getting off on the Norview exit, turning right at a stop sign, passing by a dollar tree and wendys, through a dilapidated neighborhood, accross a pedestrian bridge, and into the airport. 🤮 This just screams Lil'town, Virginia(~50k-100k residents)...instead of Norfolk/Va Beach Metro of 1.7 mil residents.

I just feel like the approach to the airport needs to be elevated immensely to follow this grandiose plan. Am I making too much of this?

To answer your last question…yes. There are many natural and built barriers between the airport and interstate that the cost would be tremendous and it would displace many people and businesses. I doubt a short freeway will provide  benefits anywhere close to the cost. Anecdotally, I’ve been through far less appealing areas leaving airports, in larger markets, and the neighborhood aesthetic is just not at all what is on my mind. FWIW, the long vacant Kmart and abandoned Kroger Marketplace saga appears to be near its end. A national developer has plans to convert the space into self storage and entertainment uses which will at least activate the center. I assume you meant the center as being dilapidated and not the Bromley neighborhood-dilapidated would be a bit extreme if the latter.

If you’re turning right at Norview, you should consider getting off at the Military exit and taking Robin Hood. It’s no more pleasing to the eye but it’s a nice drive around the runway.

Honestly, any public transit upgrades should go through Robin Hood Rd. It’s a nice shortcut but I think it would work with BRT, if and when they ever decide to do the Military Highway expansion.

I think the only option would be what’s currently planned with Robin Hood road after they close runway 14/32. Right now there’d be an exit for 64W but 64E would need to still use the current exit. There’s not a lot of room to play with here.

The answer would be no, and Norfolk wants it that way. They don't want people to get through the airport and straight to the interstate. They want people to leave the airport and hit local businesses, restaurants, gas stations, hotels, etc. Norfolk wants money to stay in Norfolk as much as possible. Sure the approach and exit could use a facelift, especially the intersection of Military/Norview, but in no way does Norfolk want traffic to go directly to the interstate.
