New Orleans needs 7,000 more FEMA trailer sites, Blanco says

New Orleans council will agree to using parts of City Park for housing

Article

Maybe they'll finally start using some of those FEMA trailers that are still setting in southwest Arkansas because no one in Louisiana wanted them.

Oh everyone wanted them, it's just that the New Orleans city council couldn't agree on where to place them, and many residents who didn't lose their houses didn't want them in their neighborhoods.

Hopefully, everything involving the trailer sites can get fully resolved soon.

Here is a very interesting article.

Merging Jefferson and Orleans Parishes

Article

Some interesting quotes..

he most recent statistical survey done by Southern Media and Opinion shows that 65.8% of post-Katrina Orleans is white, 31% black, and the remainder Asian or Hispanic.

Train and public transport systems between downtown and the inner suburbs would develop more quickly if the government was responsible to a single electorate.

If the metro area looks like one city, as one drives about, should the government not reflect the urban reality? In 1963, Orleans Parish had 720,000 residents. It is hard to argue that a combined parish of Orleans-Jefferson with an estimated population of 690,000 in 2006 would be too big.

Unlike Virginia or Massachusetts, parishes are entities that exist by simple majority of the legislature. A bill passed through the LA House and Senate could merge Orleans and Jefferson into one-as soon as the proposed special session. It has happened before.
