China Grove named for the chinaberry trees planted as an ornamental. Chinaberry trees were popular in the US South for quite some time until their invasiveness and troublesome factors became apparent.

I do believe that the Kannapolis City Schools are only one of two municipal systems in the metro with the other one being the Mooresville City Schools.

https://www.wbtv.com/2023/08/09/kannapolis-city-schools-set-first-day-class-despite-staffing-challenges/

correct in North Carolina side of the metro.  Fort Mill, Rock Hill and Clover areas are all separate school districts.   But in NC part of the metro  Mooresville City and Kannapolis city are the only 2 city school systems.

In the 1930's there was not enough tax receipts to fund local schools in most of our very rural and poor state. Even the white schools could not take blood from a turnip. NC legislature removed local control for state control and once control passes to the state it never returns. The state consolidated all schools in each county into a single administrative district for efficiency. A few local districts resisted and remained out of their county system. Charlotte and Mecklenburg County were separate until the 1950's. Fred Cochrane was a county school board member who pushed for the consolidation of the two systems, a worthy heritage. These smaller districts had to pay for district administrators such as superintendent, chief financial officer, education officer and so on from their local taxes as the state provided but a single set of administrators for the county. Monroe was separate from Union County until the early 1990's or so. St Pauls in Robeson County was separate through the 1970's because, Robeson County.

Unfortunately, the mystery company for this proposed project is not pursuing the location in question.

Looks like Rowan County is under consideration for some industrial/warehousing type of projects.  No specific location is mentioned in the article though.
