Agree, Chicago was the first city with a skyscraper with the completion of the Home Insurance Company Building in 1885 and it’s still expanding!

Above is a map of Florida in 2050, so I ask why do they continue to allow new construction and growth, without regard towards reality? Global warming isn’t a joke, and what’s taking place is a tragedy.

I have to say , I have a bit of jealousy. Oh what the City of Nashville and the State of Tennessee are missing out on! I’m not sure if the people here will ever understand the importance of transit.

Ballard is one of my favorite Seattle neighborhoods. It was founded in 1889 by Scandinavian fishermen and has evolved into a hip and vibrant district with top-notch restaurants and bars. It has a working waterfront and quick connections to downtown. I took a short stroll along Market Street this morning.

I went to Minneapolis /St Paul a week or so ago and wanted to share some observations from my trip. 

I stayed next to the stadium on the U of Minnesota Campus for easy access to the train and bus line. The station was right next to me, so I was able to park my car and take the train or the bus everywhere I needed to go. There are two train lines in the twin cities, the green line and the blue line. Interesting that whenever you approached one of the train stations the TOD's became much more apparent.

The number of older apartments and buildings along the main roads are built out for miles as well, especially along the train and bus corridors. Many of these sections are built right up to the sidewalk the way they should be and not like Gallatin or Nolensville Road with strip centers or parking lots in the front. This is the model of a northern city vs a southern city for the most part. 

Pedestrian traffic downtown is a nightmare however with the haves keeping to themselves in the skywalks during the week looking down on the have nots on the streets. The skywalks close down at 5PM and on the weekends. Unless there is a game going on downtown the streets are pretty much void of pedestrian traffic at all other times. I was downtown on a Sunday with no games and the bulk of the pedestrians were on the riverfront and it was still not crowded.

Drug use was very apparent from my observations by the youth on the transit lines. I saw people carrying syringes on the train, smoking on the train, people high on the train, etc. Pretty much a blatant disregard for the rules and the police. There was not a large homeless population there, but they were around. 

Very few tourists in my book that I could see. Most were locals and the signage was not tourist friendly, nor was anything else. Minneapolis is not geared toward tourism. St Paul is a little more tourist Friendly but not much.

Last high-rise to be built in St Paul was in the late 80's. There were some new high-rise buildings recently completed in Minneapolis, but no large tower cranes up other than some mid-rise towers on the campus.

Not a lot of murals in town either. Nashville has a lot more murals than the Twin Cities.

Maybe this topic should move to the Coffee Shop where a scientific debate can take place.

Separate from the science is our trust in the free market.  If that much of Florida will be underwater in 25 years, what bank would lend money on any type of construction in that area?  What real estate developer would put $100s of million of dollars into a property that would not be cash flow positive in 20 years?  We can trust that the free market would be making adjustments to deal with future, predictable catastrophes such as rising sea levels.  Apparently, the market says these maps are fantasy.

The free market is in itself a fantasy, relying upon projections and predictions to calculate the future. No one on this planet has the knowledge to know what the future holds, the world is but one moment away from destruction at all times. It’s however one views it, plain and simple. If you and many others perceive Florida as a wonderful place filled with great potential and possibilities then you’re definitely entitled to that opinion. I hold nothing against anyone for we are all free to choose our own opinions, I totally respect yours .
