Cool Stuff in Other Cities

The $230 million “missing link” connecting Tampa’s Lee Roy Selmon Expressway with the Gandy Bridge will finally be completed next summer:

Exiting at Dale Mabry to get to the bridge for Friday happy hour in St Pete used to be the bane of my existence. I’m glad to see this finally done.

For anyone into bridge porn, this one's for you:

LA is replacing the 6th Street Bridge / Viaduct (you know it, its the one from the drag scene in Grease) as it became structurally unsound and was not repairable.

The new bridge will likely become an instant landmark for the city:

This one has been under construction for several years and the series of arches are finally coming into shape.  I live a few miles away -- its already turning into a pretty spectacular site to behold for its ambition.  Expect to see this featured heavily during the 2026 Olympics, as they will be held just a few blocks down the street at the Coliseum.

Some construction updates here:  https://la.streetsblog.org/2020/10/27/eyes-on-the-street-new-arches-on-the-sixth-street-bridge/

A few I was able to take today while on a run:

Yeah, it's cast-in-place design. The large vertical beams will actually be going away, as that is only there temporarily in place to hold the concrete forms. Eventually, it will be concrete arches, with what looks like criss-crossed cables for suspension/tension of the arches. Cool looking design!

Cool looking, but I wonder how it will hold up to a 7.0 + magnitude earthquake.

They will be - right now that is staging (steel and wood).  If you look closer at the picture over the river you can see where the concrete is forming (bad pictures and air quality today so not very clear).

Nice.  Such a clean look. It's kind of disheartening we'll never get anything nearly as interesting here.

The lost opportunity would have been a bridge over Lake Ivanhoe.

No need to wonder:

  • The columns and abutments use triple friction pendulum bearings for seismic base isolation, which will allow movement of 30" in any lateral direction.

Thanks to COVID-19, New Yorkers were able to reclaim miles of city streets from motorized vehicles for a variety of uses.

As the pandemic subsides, the citizens of America’s largest city realize that General Motors and Toyota not control their quality of life.

It’s a valuable lesson for those of us here in Orlando:

Looking for another way - can St. Pete demolish I-175 and Tampa keep from widening I-275 to rejoin minority communities to their cities and undo the often intentional segregation of the 1960’s?

I think it’s safe to say that Tampa has eclipsed Orlando at this point.
