I don’t disagree, but I think when you add in the residential and hotel to the adjacent lots, all three buildings together will look pretty good, especially with GBT’s tower and 1200 Demonrbeun next door.

I am not sure, but unfortunately I think it will be a while as coronavirus takes its toll. The office is still only ~8-10% leased, and I highly doubt they start on the hotel portion yet.

I've been waiting for someone to express this opinion ..especially since most have shared similar thoughts about  the Peabody Plaza Office Bldg being "Suburban Cool Springs" which I don't think it is.

I'm not surprised.  I'm just waiting hear similar rumors or official announcements about several other projects.  We might be safe to say that any project that doesn't already have dirt moving is not going to start in the near term.

Once this building is matched with both of Endeavor's hotel and residential towers, this lot is going to be pretty impressive. Not to mention GBT's Tower.

Insight Global, is relocating its Nashville office to Gulch Union Tower, occupying roughly 1/2 of one floor. This will afford them added space to expand to upwards of 120 employees.  They are currently located in the Gulch Crossings building 1 block away.  

Insight Global is the third known lease at the building, along with two accounting firms: RSM and Dixon Hughes Goodman LLP. Combined, the three tenants have leased about 12% of the 329,000-square-foot building.

Looking at @smeagolsfree's development tracker, the future Endeavor residential building will go where the 2-story, white warehouse building is location in the foreground, and the future Endeavor hotel will be north of the residential building on the adjacent lot. 

Point being, those that voiced concerns over this office building looking bland/suburban, it will be blocked by future developments when looking west within The Gulch.

Can't disagree with that.  But the view of Gulch Union office tower from the interstate has greatly improved as the glass and cladding have been completed.   The tower crane for One22One shows how that building will ultimately affect the look from I-40.  This will be an impressive wall of new construction when it all gets finished.

Another thing I recently learned: the stretch of expressway is nearly 50 years old!! I believe it was opened in early 1972. Anyone know for sure or have any pics of its construction?

I actually think that angle in particular really demonstrates how dated this one looks. Without a crane there, I could be convinced that it was a 90's office building that just had its windows cleaned.  It's still welcome density and solid infill along the interstate, I'm just surprised that it looks so old already.

The Gulch Union project appears to be in modification mode by dropping the 16 story hotel, and replacing it with a second 28 story residential tower.

The baseline height for buildings on the site is 20 stories. Austin-based development company Endeavor Real Estate Group has applied, via Metro’s bonus height program, for eight additional floors to go with the 20 floors offered by right. This would allow a residential building on the north tract of the site (the segment, as noted, originally planned for a hotel structure) to rise 28 floors.

The team will go before the MDHA Design Review Committee on Tuesday, July 21st to seek approval of the modifications.

MDHA Design Review Committee has approved the concept of a second 28 story tower in place of the 16 story tower today.  More specs will have to be approved in the future.
