  1. CPCC unveiled a new branding today, which includes a completely redesigned logo and website, as well as new school colours:
  2. Graham St. was blocked past that intersection today. Had to divert onto MLK. I'm not sure how long the detour will last but you might want to consider an alternate route if you travel through that area.
  3. Thanks for sharing! I was just in Greenville yesterday (made it to 3 additional counties!) and thought Uptown definitely has a lot of potential. It's already pretty lively despite its small size, but new development is slowly coming back with some apartment complexes along Reade Circle.
  4. The City of Durham is requesting proposals for a redevelopment of their soon-to-be-vacated Police Department headquarters at 505 W. Chapel Hill St: https://www.newsobserver.com/news/local/article228823734.html The project will include affordable housing, too.
  5. It's sad that it came to this, but I think GoTriangle absolutely made the right decision to put an end to this ever-escalating project instead of continue to patch things up. At this point the line was hardly even worth it. What disappoints me most is the impact this will have on land use plans at the planned station areas. Durham was on track to build a fair amount of affordable housing along the light rail, and now who knows what might happen to those plans. Whatever happens in the future regarding transit planning in the Durham-Orange region, it needs to be something fresh rather than trying to someday resurrect this project.
  6. None of the above, just an occasional Anglophile.
  7. Bring back the pink! The Arlington needs a colour companion.
  8. The DOLRT fiasco has now become the example of what not to do in a new Strong Towns article: https://www.strongtowns.org/journal/2019/3/21/the-folly-of-go-big-or-go-home-transit
  9. No, it's off of Jones Sausage Rd. near I40, on the former Slim Jim plant site (as KJH said).
  10. Actually, the Residence Inn was already constructed at Salisbury and Lenoir. A hotel brand for the Firestone lot hasn't been announced, but the owner, Winwood Hospitality, is also planning to build a Courtyard by Marriott around the corner at McDowell and Cabarrus. The hotel at the corner of McDowell and Davie is reported to be a dual-branded Hilton Garden Inn / Homewood Suites, but there's been no movement on the site in almost two years. Finally, also on that block, a developer is planning a "Nash Square Hotel" at the southeast corner of Martin and Dawson.
  11. 20-story condo tower? Yes, please!
  12. Wow, they literally just recorded the video straight from Vimeo . . . you can see someone clicking the play button at the beginning of the video.
  13. I'm under the impression that a rezoning isn't required to build it as proposed. Would it still need a hearing then?
  14. The Raleigh bid also hinges upon State Government agreeing to a major redevelopment of part of their campus in downtown, including tearing down the Archdale Building (which I understand is in poor condition). As unlikely as that is, I can't see a stadium coming to fruition in Raleigh (though I would love for us to win the expansion). Charlotte has a huge advantage over us.
  15. Same goes for the Nash Square '"Hotel Sign" Hotel . . . maybe NCDOT will ask the developers install bollards at the corner so their downtown freeway doesn't destroy the buildings.
  16. In the meantime, Durham residents are filing a lawsuit against the City and GoTriangle over the proposed location of the DOLRT storage/maintenance facility: https://www.newsobserver.com/news/local/article225407280.html
  17. There's also an ongoing discussion at CPCC whether or not to partner with CATS to offer transit passes to students and faculty, in a similar fashion to UNCC.
  18. Julius Peppers to retire after 17 seasons: https://www.theplayerstribune.com/en-us/articles/julius-peppers-panthers-retirement Great guy; he'll definitely be missed next season.
  19. Given the proximity of the Boylan Heights site to single-family homes in the neighborhood, I don't think 40 stories is realistic there.
  20. So forgive me for not knowing, but which was the biggest obstruction to preserving and renovating this building: its poor condition or its location within NCDOT's right-of-way?
  21. The Interstate system was also not originally conceived to include lines routing through the heart of cities across the country. Induced demand works both ways — build it and they will come, take it away and they will go away. I'm all for tearing up 277, at least partly (the southern half can go, but I don't think it's realistic to remove both halves, especially since the DOT is currently working on the northern half).
  22. *561, but that doesn't mean it's actually going to be built.
  23. It just needs a bolt of lightning striking down from the sky, and then it'd be about perfect!
  24. What really impresses (and confuses) me is the one extra tall spike in Norfolk. It's far taller than anything in North Carolina.
  25. Apex is making some strides forward for bicycling facilities in the town: https://www.newsobserver.com/news/local/article223925315.html Their plan involves connections to the ATT, and making it easier overall to bike around the town.
