1. Banks and Breweries. Charlotte's got a lot!
2. Certainly an interesting collection of blocks. (approx 1/3 surface parking)
3. http://www.urbanbydesign.net/urbanbydesign/2022/7/3/donald-m-kendall-sculpture-gardens-at-pepsico-world-headquar.html https://sah-archipedia.org/buildings/NY-01-119-8074 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_M._Kendall_Sculpture_Gardens https://www.pepsico.com/sculpture-gardens Yeah I don't think they are moving their HQ anytime soon. Great place to visit next time you are in Westchester though! Y'all might recognize this one:
4. CHARLOTTE — Two people were killed after a shooting outside a popular brewery in South End, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. The shooting happened outside the Wooden Robot on South Tryon Street just before midnight. Channel 9 arrived on the scene shortly after the shooting happened and could see a large police presence. CMPD said in a release that they responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call near West Summit Avenue. A woman was found with an apparent gunshot wound and was pronounced dead on the scene by paramedics, according to police. A man was then found with a gunshot wound and transported to the hospital. He was later pronounced dead. CMPD homicide detectives are investigating. Channel 9′s Anthony Kustura learned the victims knew one another. Police said they are not looking for any suspects. Maj. Brad Koch said due to the relationship of the victims, they do not think the shooting was not a random act of violence. The police scene cleared a little after 4 a.m.
5. no worries, there's going to be tons of retail *right there*
6. "human scale design, with people focused dynamic space"
7. They are actually keeping and renovating the school building? FINALLY. Who is the developer?
8. Imagine circulator loops that run between popular nodes. Imagine timely frequencies. Imagine upgraded waiting spots that arent just a pole in the dirt. Improving ridership is easy. Implementing any of it seems impossible.
9. Upstate New York has been a center of high-tech industry for decades in both R&D and Manufacturing. https://www.bizjournals.com/sanjose/news/2021/04/26/globalfoundries-joins-exodus-moves-hq-to-new-york.html https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-hochul-announces-grand-opening-wolfspeeds-1-billon-state-art-silicon-carbide https://sunypoly.edu/research/albany-nanotech-complex.html https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/10/04/micron-chip-factory-new-york/
Micron Technology Inc., the Idaho-based memory giant, announced Tuesday it will invest up to $100 billion over the next two decades to build a massive complex of chip facilities in the Syracuse suburbs. It’s one of the largest-ever private investments in New York and one that’s expected provide a huge boost to the state’s goal of leading in domestic chip manufacturing. “Micron’s $100 billion investment in New York marks the start of something transformative in scale and possibility for our state’s economic future,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said the first phase of the project will include a $20 billion investment and ultimately could add 9,000 direct jobs statewide over the next 20-plus years. When complete, he said that the complex would include the nation’s largest clean room space at approximately 2.4 million square feet — the size of nearly 40 football fields.
10. Can't imagine that last building sticks around once that parking lot finally sells.
11. Wow, you mean a small city in the middle of nowhere that didn't even begin to take off until the middle of the 20th century (Charlotte population 100k in 1940) is cleaner than a historic port city that was the size of present-day Charlotte (~850,000) in 1940. Shocking!
12. exactly ^^ let's not forget the promised frequency: 7 minutes.
13. WF gets to take over the second best looking tower in town (that they have owned all along) and consolidate footprint into 1 other tower instead of 3, a block away. win/win.
14. WF has their broadcast studios in 2WFC along with various data servers and tons of AV equipment that goes into that operation. Used to work on that floor
15. How did it sit so long just to end up a dog salon? How on earth is it not a cornershop deli? coffee house at least... some things I will never understand.
16. The city is indifferent. As long as the trains run at all, that is "good enough". The apathy is palpable. CATS: "Ridership levels don't warrant increased frequencies." Also CATS: "Why don't more people ride the train?"
17. Who needs a beautiful brick structure with amazing courtyard when you can have cookie cutter apartments instead? The quick-buck mentality is a cancer.
18. Any idea how old that church was? edit: 1937 I would reeeeeally love to know roughly what a stick apartment build from scratch (my assumption for what is going here) costs, versus a total gut renovation of the existing structure + a smaller stick build. Yes renovations are more expensive than a knock it down, scrape the lot clear edge to edge and slap up some garbage "luxury" apartments which is why this happens ad nauseam all across the city, but I could at least sleep slightly better if I knew that the costs are truly something unpalatable like 5x a from-scratch build. I'm guessing the difference is not even that much but I just don't know.
