There are thousands of (de facto) age restricted apartments surrounding UNCC because if you believe anyone BUT students live there you are sadly mistaken.

This is south of University area but north of NoDa but these are new apartments affordable units being built by the Old Concord LYNX station by NPR Group.  I think they are called Platform Lofts but they are all affordable I think.

This is yet another example of the how the LYNX is changing Charlotte.

University City drive bys today. 

1.2 behind this huge dust cloud is the site for Top Golf behind Park Chevrolet and those new Chevy trucks are getting dusty. 

3. Least used parking garage of the LYNX system so I hear.  4. apartments across N Tryon from the station. 

5.6.7.8.  new apartments at McCullough station crane now down and the one of the most transit accessible hotels outside of hotel (Hampton Inn next door) 

9.  Crane only one in the university area now at the Marriott hotel on campus.   10.  JW Clay parking garage with Atrium office there and a Sabor will open there too. 

11.12.13.14  new Marriott hotel on campus is full speed ahead.  Right at the JW Clay station and this hotel will be very successful.   Beautiful hotel

I keep finding photos I took today to post.  anywho here is the new apartment complex by the McCullough LYNX station that replaced 2 one story office buildings.  Talk about higher density.  it will ground floor retail too.

Great aerial views  of University Place and the surrounding area that NCMIKE1990 posted above  It would be great if a comparison view from around 1986 could be found and posted.  That would be around the time that University Place was up and running so to speak

The Time Machine has satellite views of the area from 1978 and 1993. Nothing from the '80s though.

Harris used to be only 2 lanes and terminated at 49, but was widened and extended southward to join up with The Plaza and Newell Hickory Grove Rd sometime in the '80s I'm assuming.

W. T. Harris, for whom the road is named, was the Harris in Harris Teeter grocery fame.

The Teeter brothers opened a food store in Mooresville in 1949. Both stores benefitted from the expanding Charlotte region and economy. As local grocers they took advantage of the changes where new entrants to the markets could adapt and succeed: Parking for patrons, serve yourself selection, suburban locations and such.

They merged their businesses in 1960.

Looks like Novant is rezoning the parcel at Tryon and Mallard Creek Church. Four stories and up to 155k square footage.

I’m loving the way the vacant areas around the Lightrail Stations area developing.  I just hope in the future that another Station is established between Old Concord and Tom Hunter.   There’s so much vacant land and reuse ready industrial sites between those two stations.

Something that I have always wanted to see on that big water tower.... Signage!

A green crown and "CLT" has been added sometime this year. I always felt that water tower needed the word Charlotte or something on it and they finally listened to me. Ha!

1, 2. drove down a closed road to get this shot of the Top Golf, the only Top Golf that you can ride a train to from uptown.  3. new Panorama Holdings apartment site between Top Golf and the LYNX station.   4.5. 6. University City LYNX station garage.  7. 8.  new Oxford Properties apartments across Tryon from the station.  .9 10.  11. The current location of University Hospital was the "poor farm". A home for indigent, which was a municipal obligation from millenia before. I remember seeing it as a large clapboard country home, a few outbuildings and it sat at a high point on the land which was at that time undeveloped. Open fields in all directions. WT harris drops away in each direction as does N Tryon. It had a fancy name, The Oaks, and maybe there were some. My singular memory is driving along there in nice weather and seeing a woman and a few other figures out in the landscape, each dressed simply. There is precious little information about indigent homes online, as one could expect. I found no photos with a five minute search. The county library next to the hospital at 301 E WT Harris has a potters field (burial place for paupers-biblical origin) beside it which is the only reminder today of that time and place.

Edit: My partner has more personal history to share about the location says it had farm animals, though not a true farm in her sense of the word. Gardens for food, chickens, a mule, a few superannuated large animals. Not intended to be a self sufficient facility. Most important is that it was for the indigent aged , no others. And for whites, as one could also predict.

There are those among us who have this living memory.
