Always loved this statue- It belongs in a large roundabout intersection in a neighborhood close to uptown. The Queen Charlotte Statue in the Airport is one of my favorite statues ever. I always thought a 100 foot tall one would look nice on top of Crowder's Mountain coming in from the West - a la "Christ the Redeemer" statue in Rio De Janeiro.  Maybe one day lol.

Is there anything more southern than a live oak tree? This one is right off of Tyvola in south Charlotte. It really felt 5 degrees cooler underneath.  I’ve noticed a lot of Magnolias and Live Oaks in the SouthPark and Providence areas of Charlotte. Shelby also has a large collection of live oaks completely lining its downtown streets. Somewhat unusual for western North Carolina.

Yes, a few, maybe several, since lots were available at little or no cost in the 70's. I performed a brief search and could not find details of such specifics as you mention but my memory is certain that there were some houses moved into 4th ward and perhaps out as well.

Guess who is back and been reading posts in the background for the last many years! A2 that’s who!!!!

(Actually A2.  , since you have to now have three characters, lol. ) 

I still live in NC but at a mile up in the High Country in extreme NW Watauga county, where it’s a marvelous 73 degrees as I type!

You might be wondering why in the heck I’m just now jumping back into the picture and I all I can say is that I simply had lost my prior password and old email as I established myself a decade plus back when I was working Uptown at First Union a long, long time ago (Long live Ed Crutchfield!). So long story short, I’m still A2 just a lot older, ha!

I say all that to ask the one thing that MADE me get back in:

 It is KJ’s picture at the very top of this page. What the heck is that reflection in the Westin! It’s like a neon vehicle in the windows. I’m truly confused as to how in the world that is there. Please tell me someone can explain. KJ are you out there!?

ps—-in Charlotte still quite a bit for work as I’m a traveling man these days (so don’t count me out for a meet up when you guys get together). I am simply stunned at where this city has come in the last 10 plus years. I barely recognize Uptown. But even more so Southend! My old home place is just a memory when I travel through. Simply amazing!

^^^ that neon car is a reflection of something inside the office where I took that photo from but it does look like it is appearing on the Westin.  

Yes sometimes Charlotte grows in such ways if you don't go down a street in the last 6 months something new pops up and longer periods of absence the changes even greater.  

Just think the differences in the  8 year period since the DNC and the upcoming RNC next year.   Things like new BB&T Ballpark, Romare Bearden Park, numerous high rises including the 300 South Tryon Barings, Legacy 1, Kimpton, the Springhill Suites, the new Bohemian, the 2 Sky Houses, the Ascent, Stonewall Station, 550 Stonewall, the LYNX extension, First Ward Park etc.    We have built almost another city center within our own,  It is truly remarkable.

^ thank you for relieving me of that perplexing puzzle KJ. And you are 100% correct Charlotte has built essentially another city in the last decade. Sometimes we get caught up in things we don’t like and how they are built and lose sight of how blessed it is to be in a thriving city and state. NC, and especially Charlotte, have thrived this last decade. We should all be thankful to even be able to complain about some building or project. Others would actually just like to have something to talk about at all. Ha! 

 

Thanks again for solving the mystery and for keeping us all abreast of the changes in the Queen City. Always enjoy your posts and pics. That goes for all the contributors in the UP community. 

 

ps—-a special shout out to some old pals:

atlrvr, Messian Corners, Dubone, and many others who have been on this site for the last decade plus. By the way RDF has come a loooong way over the years. I remember him posting way back when. Now he is quite the source for info. I am not sure what you do now RDF, but I’m sure you have to be happy doing what you love these days. At least that’s the way I figure it. 

 

pss—-perhaps I will throw my economics and market commentary on in some future posts. I never like to be the pessimist or optimist, just a realist. My two cents for this post is that Charlotte should be able to go vertical with most all projects that have a shovel in the ground within the next nine to twelve months. After that, the undercurrent of the markets gets quite interesting (from a macro level). The one positive is that even with a possible recession looming, Charlotte is diversifying their economic base. This is a HUGE deal, and should help it weather the coming downturn. Mark this post as we will see a major downturn and soon, with a strong likelihood of the birth pains happening before the next election.

^ it’s amazing how time flies!  You were into UP before you became the RDF we know and admire Today. Over the last few years I have had the pleasure of reading in the shadows. You’ve come a long way my friend! (Especially from your earlier photoshop pics of future projects. Oh yeah, I remember)

We are truly fortunate to have you as a huge contributor! I know many on this site  are in a position to be “in the know”, as you guys still have limitations on what you can or can not say (with non disclosure agreements and whatnot), it’s really nice to see you (and others) give us some of those “knowledge crumbs” that you can divulge.  

As for me,  I started  the UP addiction back in 05’ (thanks a lot Neo!) and for some reason or another have four kids now, lol. Crazy! Now I admire the high country and get to live vicariously through you guys on the development of the  high rises! I like em’ both! 

Ps—-sorry to divert from the topic of “pic of the day”, but I just had to chime in since you guys are like a virtual family that I have had the pleasure of learning from all these many years.
