What's going on in New Orleans

I'll be looking forward to seeing what developments will be going on down there. :D

Just check the forum every once in a while :D

We just had a major shopping mall/complex approved today in Covinton. There has been a big NIMBY vs city and urban planners battle over this development over the last few months, but it was unanimously approved.

The complex will be home to a very large mall(I forgot the exact size) a Sams Club, a Wal-Mart Supercenter, Academy Sports, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Two new Movie Theaters. This will all be built near Interstate 12, where two 10-15 story hotels are already under construction. The Wal-Mart Supercenter is what got people in an uproar. We already have one here in Covington, and many people were opposed to having another WMS right next to a Sams Club, but again, it was all approved today. This will only add to the absolutely horrible traffic here in Saint Tammany Parish until the roads and interstates are widened, but a shopping complex like this was neccesary.

Two new exit ramps will be added to I-12 to help ease all of the traffic that is expected to be in this area of Covington, which seems to be getting new developments proposed for it every day.

I can see both of the views on this one.

I am in favor of letting the major casinos in on the gambling business. But if you did that, there would be smaller privately owned casinos wanting to get in on it, and so on..

Another example of how all of this is just "one big mess"

I'm expecting a very big, noticeable surge that will garner national attention after Mardi Gras, as Spring begins, and all of next Summer. Lots of stuff will be occurring by then. We are still building the infrastructure in the flooded areas and it likely won't be completed until March in some areas.

Hopefully getting people to show up and actually see New Orleans during Mardi Gras will help get more people to support the rebuilding process and quiet the 'should we rebuild it' group.

I think that there are going to me many thousands(at least) of people who will want to come down for three reasons.

1) To help support New Orleans during the rebuilding process, and help the econmy move forward.

2) To simply see what the city and the surrounding areas look like. Believe me, seein all the damage and destruction is absolutely horrible, but seeing it in person is another story.

3) To simply come because it's Mardi Gras. Its a shortened and different Mardi Gras, but most of the krewes in NOLA are rolling, the Quarter is going to be mostly the same, and all of the vital areas to Mardi Gras are coming back quickly.

Too bad that such a great collection was ruined.

That is a real shame, it really is. That was such a spectacular wine collection. :(

Rumor of levee dynamite persists

Expert: Explanation lies in history of bias

Article

I've heard about that a while back ago. I had thought about posting something about it but I hated to bring up something so negative and is just rumors. That and I figured someone down there would be able to talk about this much better than I could.

I like this plan.

From what I have been seeing, most of the residents who got 10 feet of water in their homes are either planning to live in another area of the city, or in the metro area. I really dont think the demand is going to be there in the lower 9th or NOLA East.

Areas of the city like New Orleans East should never have been developed and inhabited in the first place.

Though I agree that allowing some willing residents to move back in to their neighborhoods and then asking them to move is not the right thing to do.

More contoversy...this time over money going to Entergy....

I don't see the problem with using federal money here. If we could give federal dollars to such badly run companies as United Airlines and USAirways.....This isn't just helping a private business, it's rebuilding a region. I am very disappointed at the lack of commitment to the region.
