Detroit Casino Megathread

I think it's too bad about the building. It could have been worse though. I thought that it was originally going to go into the church tower and then into the school, instead of going diagonally across the street like it does now.

But I do think the skywalk will add more vibrancy to the area, like all of the signs and flags and things do now. I'm worried that it might make a mental division, cutting off the rest of Monroe in people's minds. I don't know.

If anything it will finally tie that block into the rest of Monroe, not make it feel as if its been cut off. At the end of the day, though, it doesn't really matter because the block to the east will be little more than the churches and parking garage which do more than their fair share to create a dead-zone.

It appears that the skywalk enters and exits the school at a point midway between the second and third floors, making an connection leaving the skywalk into the school kind of difficult. Do we know what Greektown plans on using the school building for? Does there even need to be a way to get off the skywalk while in the school?

If finished right, so that the skywalk looks like it cleanely slices into the building without any strange patches around the opening, it could actually look quite cool.

Apparently, according to http://sof8mile.blogspot.com/, the casino has a 99-year lease on the old school house, and it will be used as office space for the casino. That was kind of a surprise to me, as I was always under the impression that they were sold the building. I was also told that the casino is looking to putting some kind of retail/business into the basement of the school.

I'm really interested to see what the next retail building that will be built next door to it will look like.

I am actually starting to like MGM. I think that area is going to be really nice, once the DTE and MGM Grand Beautifications are finished. The only thing that is needed to complete that district is MGM Grand's famous Residential Towers and Commericial Infill. And the 400 room Expansion.

I think Motorcity is a bit to Retro, if you will, for me.

Onto Greektown: I can't wait for that tower to rise high and above the street. It is going to be looking Slik. And I definetly think they will be putting in a retail promenade between Monroe and the Garage because of the way that stair and elevator tower pokes out.

You know, they are really turning out to look not half bad, with is a compliment coming from me.

I didn't realize just how much Greektown Casino Hotel will loom over the Monroe storefronts. It will be quite a sight when completed.

That last shot of MotorCity makes it look very nice, especially how the sunlight catches the stainless steel trimming. It seems it will look its best during sunset. Daytime shots really don't flatter it.

The base of the poles will be covered. I remember thinking the same thing about the poles around downtown when they were installed, but every pole of this style has decorative base covers. They'll eventually be installed. :)

I think they look good in a sense to blend the streetscape eventhough the MGM complex is its own version of glitz.

You know what I noticed that I never noticed before? How well the curved corners of the Art Moderne-styled DTE building match well with the curved corners of the MGM. Michi, do you think you could get some shots of the activity over at the DTE campus? Detroit will be giving birth to yet another superblock with that one. lol
