Porta Potty and some construction equipment on the Old Buncombe Road side where the old plant is. Road closed signs up along Brooks Avenue also in the project site area. We shall see.

That's like a whole mini downtown itself. Heck, I wouldn't mind seeing a couple of those buildings downtown.

The latest estimated price tag for the project is more than $2 billion — double the original estimation from just a few years ago.

The former water treatment building, as well as a former textile plant, were part of a March 12 tour of the site, which included developers, state and local officials, and representatives from President Joe Biden's administration.

Dean Warhaft, a Miami-based developer spearheading the project, said the redevelopment would be expansive and likely take place in up to seven phases.

Construction on the first of those phases is set to begin this fall, and will include 227 apartments and the conversion of the defunct water treatment plant into a restaurant and distillery.

I would love to see this succeed wildly with creative land use and architecture. I am sympathetic to gentrification concerns....but the answer is not to leave a blighted area alone to preserve dirt cheap housing.

I can't fathom how the city isn't insistent that this be annexed. I know it is not quite adjacent but it's not far from the current city limits. There has to be a way to get this into the city limits; whether through finger annexation or something else. It would be an enormous miss on many fronts, and would probably be harder to do later after the development and residential.
