  1. Perhaps that is true for the person who needs only to get their Lululemon fix. I'm really not sure where you're coming from on this topic. For those of us that actually live and work downtown (or for those who actually spend time enjoying our beautiful urban core), I can attest to one's willingness to walk to Publix, Heritage Green, Unity Park, Cleveland Park, Fluor Field, Downtown Alive/Main Street Fridays from all varieties of points of origin. I witness this and take part in this daily.
  2. People sure seem to walk downtown. As @NewlyUpstate notes, you've got to create the right environment. Greenville has many of these environments, but Magnolia Park's design prevents it from being included in that list.
  3. LOL -- you nailed it there. Well, this was all during the great recession. I believe the economic conditions played a large role. Without the County moving out there (or another large office presence for that matter) to take up space and help shore up their proforma, I'm not sure it was going to work out to begin with. Ultimately, I think the County made the right decision in keeping their administration and services in the city center.
  4. One of the original concepts was to have a true mixed use development that included residential over the retail spaces, and two 10 story buildings (one for county government and one of a residential use, I believe). Traffic was a concern and clearly it was never advanced as an idea beyond that point.
  5. Thanks for posting this. I generally like where the City is spending their funds and what they are prioritizing. Can anyone shed light on what this is: $500,000 for the creation of the downtown Academy Street bypass to divert vehicles away from College Street and improve traffic flow
  6. Signage is up for the new restaurants at Main/Broad.
  7. I'll say that I think they did a nice job on the memorial.
  8. Hey, RT! It's nice to see your name around here! Don't be a stranger!
  9. I know there was discussion on this at the time, but I never followed the actual DRB meetings to know how the committee ruled. However, I’m really glad the City got its way in pushing for the steps down to Academy Street. It’s really surprising how that small gesture actually affects your experience as a driver on a well-traveled corridor into downtown. Has anyone else noticed this? It’s still not finished, but it totally changes the street language from thoroughfare to pedestrian realm. More redevelopments with gestures like this will slow traffic on Academy.
  10. Besides the Delano, is this the only other parcel not included in the City's RFP?
  11. This sign is now up on Mayberry Street. I guess this parcel is excluded from the RFP. Trey Cole is the contact.
  12. You're not seeing the delays because you're not hyper tuned in and focused on it. For all you know, many of those tower cranes were delayed 2 years. You're getting instant satisfaction simply because they're up and visible NOW. Oh, hmm -- DELAYS: https://atlanta.urbanize.city/post/no2-opus-place-midtown-skyscraper-project-development-lands-40m-financing
  13. I see. What you really want is a Haussmann-style intervention (which would be great, but incredibly unrealistic). The problem is ownership, right? The best that the city can do is create a masterplan and try to lead developers to a single vision. We ARE seeing this entire area being remade, it's just not the immediate satisfaction that you'd like. This area absolutely has developers' attention.
  14. This is happening currently thanks to the Swamp Rabbit Trail investment.

    The West End

Slow is good in promoting a walkable environment. Additionally, the reworking of the road network through County Square should help get people off of Augusta. I'm not worried about traffic, personally.
  16. The expansion of The Commons has started. The demolition is underway, removing the existing building skin.
  17. Last week, a County employee told me that their updated move-in date is about a month out now. I wonder if that factored in this particular delay? I'm not sure how up-to-date their information was...
  18. “Because it was ugly” yes, you’re an expert.
  19. No, no— explain the cost differential of through-wall mechanical units and a condenser farm on the roof. You’re the expert, and this is one of your hang ups.

    The West End

This has been in the works (or rumored and dreamed about by leaders) for years. It’s great to see the wheels finally turning. I’d love to see some height closer to Field Street.
  21. It's always "at no additional cost".
  22. For the record, the folks of Delaware are more excited about broad access to South Carolina than the other way around, right?
  23. I hate to see this one. While I have never walked in their store or made a purchase, I have always appreciated their storefront displays as being pleasant to look at.
  24. The way the conversation is framed today seems misleading. I don’t know that this is really the core issue. How has this only become a problem of the last 20 years? Columbia has prospered before. Taxes can be cited, but it really seems to be a result of poor planning and management.
  25. Just to be clear: I think we are on the same page. I’m pointing out that their complaining will have no basis once it starts.
