1. Who do they think they are, Crescent Development? But seriously, very bad news. I loved the latest designs of the terminal and entrance. If they have to cut something, I hope it's the canopy (much as I like it) and that it can be added at a later date. This would be vastly preferable to an overall VE'ed design. IMO, the look of the airport is so important since it's often the first or only part of the city so many visitors see.
2. It seems like the demand for all of these projects already exists. The risks in building it all now are that future demand will be less (see Pittsburgh and St Louis as fairly recent examples of de-hubbed airports, both of which I know everyone is aware of) and/or that the cost of the expansion at once will necessarily increase costs to airlines (which could lead to diminished future demand). If Charlotte was assured of long-term hub status they would indeed be building it all now because the demand is there. I think we are saying the same thing and am confident that you know more about this than me. Anecdotally, it would be hard to walk through any part of CLT today and not believe that they have the demand to fill any reasonable (<25%) capacity increase immediately. If they had 50% more gates/overall terminal capacity, I suspect they would quickly use it. The only thing holding back growth these days seems to be capacity.
3. Not really sure where to put this but I found it interesting and maybe someone else will also. Looking at the full Urban Planet site, the Charlotte board alone has more posts than any country outside the US and any state in the US. It is by far the most vibrant community on UP (unless I'm missing something). Anyone know why that is? I found this board by accident (though I had been looking for something like it for years and was thrilled when I stumbled upon it). Curious how others came upon it and why the Charlotte community is the most active. Also, who started UP and where are they based? Thanks.
4. Staggering is a good word. Mind-blowing fits also. With the economy, there is massive development in a lot of places around the country. However, 18 months ago we were thinking that some of the proposed projects wouldn't get built this cycle and that the boom's end was imminent. Now, there is no end in sight. And yet, Daniel Levine continues to sit on his ass(ets) and hold First Ward hostage...
5. I'm in the minority apparently but I liked the distinctiveness of the glass in earlier renderings more than the latest design (though it's not bad either). This looks like a lot of other buildings and the other didn't.
6. The players might prefer this to driving to SC and I think it would be cool since I'm not far away. That said, I really think it will be in SC and that it will be a MASSIVE development with office, homes, retail, an outdoor stadium, indoor and outdoor practice fields and state of the art training and multimedia facilities. I expect it will be similar to the massive new Vikings complex. I base this on nothing more than Tepper's comments (but that's a lot). He wants something in SC so that when he consolidates training camp and regular practice facilities SC is still involved. He also made it clear that he wants a mixed use development and that he is very focused on the NFL arms race. Not to mention the $11 billion...
7. Yeah, that was an awful story. I'm confused though. McColl set them straight and they included his quotes but led with the sensationalist nonsense. I'm less angry and more embarrassed for the author.
8. I rarely go to Epicentre but I don't think it's nearly as bad as it is being portrayed. I can think of some new construction with worse design and materials (initials of Legacy Union). For what it is, it's fine. Could/should be better but not at all something I wish didn't exist.
9. Or maybe it's better that we are regularly confused with Charlottesville since UVA has top tier medical, law and research institutions. We should lean into the confusion... But seriously, lack of a top tier school IS a big deal for Charlotte and we're going to have to bypass Raleigh to fix it.
10. You literally took the words out of my mouth...
11. With the decimated line and loss of Olsen, I'll just drop this classic here (even though I remain optimistic): https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=jim+mora+playoffs&&view=detail&mid=500EB7CE2A6F0A8A2D65500EB7CE2A6F0A8A2D65&&FORM=VRDGAR
12. Agree completely on the CATS app. Thanks for the tip on Transit! Very cool app.
13. Great pics. Two observations: 1. BOA will be blocked from a clear view of the field by the massive jumbotron with their name on it. Too bad for them. They would be able to watch on the jumbotron on the opposite side of the stadium (or they could get a great view by, you know, watching on tv). 2. Just seeing those two gentlemen standing by the edge makes me nervous...
14. This sounds like a great way to handle the renovation (far less disruptive and much quicker). Hope you are right.
15. This is when I wish I didn't have large trees all around my house and 2+ acres. I don't think I will sleep much until this passes...
16. https://slate.com/business/2018/09/after-losing-to-uber-cities-are-squeezing-scooters-and-bike-shares.html EXCELLENT article.
17. Cool Panthers mural going up on garage where the new bank building is planned...check it out.
18. Though I wonder how many burger chains we need (aside from In-N-Out which we definitely need), the ahi tuna burger looks awesome...
19. If what they build is close to the renderings and if they don't ask for a bunch of public money to get it done, I'll be thrilled and surprised. I hope this works out, could be great for that area.
20. I was thinking Borg/Night Hawk, but it's been awhile. Seems like a great addition (and Blue Ridge Junction would also be a great place for a logging themed flume ride).
21. Hot take: love the vibe of Price's...the chicken is meh. I prefer Bojangles (though I shouldn't be eating fried chicken at my age).
22. I disagree on the grass. The large lawn is easily the coolest part of this development and I love that (particularly since it will be used for a lot of community events). They also did a good job on parking, IMO. We've now apparently confirmed that the existing center fronting Providence will be demolished (since Penn Station and Papa John's, among others, are joining HT in relocating). Makes sense but interesting because that center isn't old and is still in good condition. Will be interesting to see what they do with that land (if indeed they knock the center down).
23. Just to clarify, they couldn't put the period in the link. It's 4.5, not 45.
24. I don't necessarily think they shouldn't be allowed to build these. I just think they shouldn't build them. I assume they will build them if they can sell them. Opposing the design isn't a political position (in any way, in my opinion). That's why many of us support new design standards (regardless of politics). The hope is that we will get better designs for both the occupants and the people who move around the city every day. I think these are pretty awful looking, particularly at that price point and in that location. I'm surprised people want them. I also wonder why people would pay that premium to be near light rail and then want two car garages...what's the point?
