  1. This has nothing to do with the GA, Republicans or Democrats. This is similar to resistance to efforts (by Republicans) to end vehicle inspections. Inspection shops objected (in 2009 and 2013) and it went nowhere. That would have been a law change...this is simply enforcing an existing law. It is 100% boneheaded and borderline corrupt but you have to blame auto dealers and bureaucrats at the DMV. The solar thing isn't happening. As a Prius driver looking at electric cars and solar panels for my roof, I'm on your side...I don't think how you vote in November will change much on these issues though.
  2. Aside from the clock (which looks to me like the architect superimposed his wristwatch on the front of the building), I love this design. That said, I can't see it getting built in Charlotte...I'm picturing something rectangular with a lot of brick. More functional than iconic, unfortunately.
  3. Similarly, I ran by the under-construction Embassy Suites by the convention center this morning...what a missed opportunity. I can live with the bland architecture but can't understand the economics that would support this small hotel on (what would appear to be) a fairly prime parcel. Seems like it would fit well in Ballantyne but here it feels like the site is very underutilized.
  4. I know absolutely nothing but I will be surprised if this doesn't clinch the deal. This seems like a move specifically designed to appeal to the board of commissioners...
  5. Good news for you: I'm an old (47), white, fairly conservative (though rabidly anti-war), church goer (though I'm admittedly increasingly skeptical). I'm very much against this ridiculous law but generally it might be good for you that I don't vote...
  6. Perhaps. Or maybe I'm going to vote for his opponent by not voting for him. Either way, if I voted I wouldn't vote for Cooper or McCrory (I'd vote for the Libertarian, most likely, which would again largely be an exercise in futility). My views on politics don't really belong in this thread though so I'll refrain from further comment....
  7. Actually, I don't vote and I complain plenty. Or is that not what you meant? I don't vote because the system is rigged both locally and nationally and I'm completely disillusioned by the political process. I also find that I can't stand any individual who runs for office. I'd vote if there was a real choice and I voted when I lived in San Diego because of the propositions on the ballot. In Weddington where I live, I typically have my choice of Republicans...no thanks. I've been lectured plenty on why this is un-American but since I'm the least patriotic person I know those arguments haven't moved me.
  8. DH Griffin on site when I ran past at lunch...would appear demolition is imminent.
  9. This would far exceed my expectations for that property. Fantastic news if this is actually under consideration.
  10. I don't understand the discrepancy in the land payments. That said, it's noteworthy how much less dense the Crescent proposal is compared to the others. From their perspective, they may be thinking that there will be an awful lot of office, retail and hotel SF soon a few blocks away (developed predominantly by them). Perhaps their proposal reflects some concern about filling that much office and retail space and that many hotel rooms... I know too little about too much of these proposals to have an intelligent opinion on which one is the best.
  11. For those not picturing the building in question: https://www.google.com/maps/@35.2220579,-80.8480312,3a,75y,25.33h,90.28t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sZ7CKakvT38-sCcTuJrxn7Q!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!6m1!1e1
  12. Looks like a C, C- project...honestly, about what I expected from Levine. I don't think it's horrific and I do think that just putting that many people in the neighborhood will help other projects advance.
  13. With all due respect to others, I'm not worried as long as Jayvee and RDF remain confident...
  14. Like a few others, I actually like the scale of Crescent's "proposal". I like how the town-homes impact the public space (though i'd want fewer total than indicated). Ideally, the final will combine elements of both the Crescent and Conformity plans (a mix of higher and lower density). I think it would be great to winnow this down to the two and ask for alterations/more details (like approved financing and timelines for building). I've always enjoyed this stretch of N. Poplar (and this has the potential to be much better): https://www.google.com/maps/place/Prospect+St,+Charlotte,+NC+28204/@35.2325435,-80.839985,3a,60y,189.72h,90.48t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sCLkLBhwFkHnQgt54YWS6Og!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!4m5!3m4!1s0x8856a01c3b44dcef:0xeb81250836b72f3b!8m2!3d35.2209586!4d-80.8258771
  15. The paper is printed in University City at a plant purchased from Dow Jones (back in 2014, I believe).
  16. Here's your answer: Private utility work is starting this month. Please be advised of the upcoming traffic changes. This is a courtesy notice regarding private utility work occurring in the corridor. Construction on the Gold Line Ph. 2 project is scheduled to begin in late October, 2016. As other utility companies perform maintenance, additional notices will be sent. Please feel free to forward to anyone who is interested in this information. The eastbound left lane of West Trade Street between Cedar Street and Graham Street will close on Monday, May 23, 2016 at 9 a.m. and will re-open on Monday, September 26, 2016 at 4 p.m. The westbound left lane will have daily closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the same time frame. This closure is necessary for utility relocation work. One eastbound and westbound lane will remain open to traffic. Weather and unforeseen circumstances occasionally prevent work from being completed as scheduled, and make it unsafe to reopen lanes or streets when planned. When this occurs, City traffic engineers work directly with other City staff and contractors to resolve the situation as quickly as possible and reduce impacts to the traveling public. Pedestrians walking near work zone areas should be alert, cautious and allow extra traveling time. It is advised they cross at signalized intersections, use pedestrian walk signals where available and abide by detour signage. Motorists traveling through work zone areas should be alert and extra cautious. Drivers should get in the correct lane well in advance and constantly be on the lookout for vehicles merging into adjacent travel lanes as they approach a work zone. Drivers should double their following distance. Thank you, Teresa Assistant Property Manager, Gateway Village | Cousins Properties Incorporated 800 West Trade Street, Suite 100 | Charlotte, NC 28202
