I'm excited about Harris Teeter. I live in the West End and it's much easier to go down Augusta Road then drive through the middle of downtown. Plus Harris Teeter will let you order groceries online and then pull up and they put it in your car for you. I will definitely be a customer. I think they are really serving two different markets. Publix will pick up all of the people that are going to be living in the apartment complexes and Harris Teeter is going to get the families that own the houses in the Augusta Road and North Main area. Yeah the reason those spaces are empty is because they can command higher rent. I can't say where but I know of a location that closed and immediately there was ridiculous demand to rent it and they weren't even looking to rent. People came to them. I'm getting random strangers coming to ask me to sell my houses and I'm in no way interested in selling but they won't stop. That's just the kind of demand that's down there right now and the market will dictate prices. Quite frankly I don't really have any use for green and pink clothing boutiques and all that other weird stuff. I'm looking forward to things moving in that people really want that can pay the rent. I don't know how true this is but I have heard that the city has been pretty direct with the owners of Sharky's, City Tavern, Rey's and On The Rocks that if they don't change their business model they will be targeted with sled and things like that because the city does not feel they fit the mold anymore. I feel bad for them. It's like the city used them to get everybody coming down there and have it be a fun place and the minute they don't need them anymore they want to throw them away. I'm amazed how many people are opposed to it. Their whole argument is unlogical because it says we should not build a park until roads are fixed. The roads are a state and federal thing. The park has to do with city level decisions and funding. I'm really shocked at how uninformed people are on how these different things work. It's like they don't pay attention to anything else but they know they hit that pothole on the way to work so let's yell and scream about it and block a park. I'm so glad that I live in a city where they spend money on things like parks. I come from a horrible City in the Northeast where no money gets spent on that type of thing and it is literally a hell on Earth to live there.
