According to a report by the Center for American Progress, Asheville Regional and Columbia Metropolitan are two airports that could be in line to lose air traffic control services - effectively shutting them down - if massive federal budget cuts are implemented in January 2013 under the so-called "sequestration" process. Florence Regional Airport also could be affected. While GSP could see an economic benefit in the form of increased traffic from such closures, the economic impact to the Columbia and Asheville areas would be quite serious. http://airnation.net/2012/08/05/100-airports-could-close/

The next step in WINSPAN construction will start with our North Wing, which will eventually house the airport’s administrative offices. In order to efficiently move forward with construction of the North Wing Project, GSP will be closing the Short Term Parking lot to entering vehicles starting August 10. Any cars that are already parked in the lot on August 10 and after will have until August 20 to clear out.

Terminal expansion (landside) is well underway. Took a redeye home from San Diego last night and when I got to GSP this morning all the large trees have been cut down between landside and garage B. Guys were on site with chain saws. Odd to see the area so open. Sad to see such large trees have to go.

Percentage change: 103.4%

2. New rental car center will be opening February 3rd.

Starting this fall, the single daily Southwest flight to Orlando will become seasonal only. The two reasons. 1) Southwest is not competing well with Allegiant on the Orlando route. 2) The daily Southwest flight from GSP to Orlando is near full as it is a continuation of a flight from BOS/BWI. The daily flight from Orlando to GSP is operating below 50% load factor as it terminates in GSP and does not continue on to another city. All other Southwest nonstops / flights from GSP remain the same.

That's disappointing but not surprising to hear. I actually was surprised to see Southwest start the Orlando flight with Allegiant already flying there for usually cheaper fares.

On the flip side, this might make Allegiant add seats/flights due to increased demand.

The daily flight from Orlando does not terminate at GSP.  It starts the day in ALB and travels to MCO to GSP to BNA to MSY to DEN and terminates in SNA.  Southwest's RON flights to GSP are from Baltimore and Midway.

Let me phrase it better. Almost 100 percent of the passengers from MCO to GSP terminate in GSP. There is almost no through passenger traffic to BNA, as there are multiple MCO-BNA flights. Not a typical Southwest through passenger type flight in the typical Southwest way. The point of my post, the Orlando flight goes seasonal Starting this fall.

When this carrier takes flight, initial cities will be Newport News, Pittsburgh, Providence, Orlando, West Palm Beach. Apparently People Express has already been in talks with additional airports and that list includes Greenville and Charleston as well as Knoxville, Jacksonville, Syracuse, Buffalo, Portland (ME), Long Island MacArthur airport, Memphis, Cincinnati and Huntsville. Will be interesting to follow.

Here's some pictures I took of what the inside of GSP is looking like these days.  Lots of work is going on around the baggage claim areas.  All of the airport offices and airline baggage claim offices have been boarded off and moved to other parts of the airport.  Delta and Southwest have been moved across from baggage claim 1 and US Airways across from the United ticket counter.  Some other offices have been moved to the other end in temporary offices built near Delta.  The area between baggage claim 1 and 2 is also blocked off as they build a new one.  The escalators going upstairs to the A concourse have also been boarded up as well.  The only way to access the 2nd level right now is between the USAirways and Southwest ticket counters.  As of right now there are not any restrooms on the ticketing level.  Only upstairs.

Flew back into GSP today for the first time since my move.  Very disappointed in the rental car area.  Being 5 Star Gold, I was in search of a Hertz screen / board with my name.  Guess what, GSP doesn't have the electronic boards.  You still have to stand in line in the rental car office (which seem too small for any possible future growth).  :dunno:  Really, really a major oversight on GSP's part and an inconvenience to frequent travelers.  Thumbs down on this part of the remodel.  Sort of backward, to not have the screens.

Were you expecting the retrofit to be as big as DFW or something?

Has nothing to do with size.

I was expecting the remodel to be quality and detailed.

NUMEROUS airports smaller than GSP have the screens for the rental car companies so frequent travelers can find their name and head straight to the car.  Seems like a major overisght in the detail / quality department, especially given the percentage of travelers at GSP that are frequent business travelers.

I used to expect more from the Greenville area.....guess I need to lower my expectations for the area.
