COMPLETE: Dunkin' Donuts Center renovations

Yes taxes but taxes at a %rate not raising taxes. I think yoou missed my point. More people spending more locally at the same or lower tax rate.

i didn't miss your point. i know that. but the people who would go to concerts aren't likely to be spending money in the local economy other than at the venue itself. but this will never happen, so why keep harping on it?

Because I disagree with you. Whenever I used to go to concerts downtown I would go to the local establisments afterward whether it be to get a drink ot breakfast or what have you.

The city would always be more crowded after these events.

And I dont meant to be harping...just discussing :yahoo:

see, you're changing the subject. you said we need a tweeter center. you said south county would be good. what city is in south county? what city is near tweeter?

i understand your point about the dunk being used for more concerts, but we won't get much gain from an outdoor ampitheatre in south county other than revenue directly from the venue itself.

Oh sorry. You are correct but the mention of an outdoor theatre was suplimental. It isnt what my main points were. I just said that an outdoor theatre could work in south county. There really isnt much "in the area" down there but my original point to where if the Dunk had the capacity to bring in the bigger shows to Providence like say that we lose to Bos or hartford being in providence which isw full of late night venders of sort would benefit greatly from such an event. If we could bring more sport to the dunk it would benefit the area aswell.

I didnt look back to see where the conversation went with the outdoor thing. The benefit there would be to a lesser degree and would be more of a convieniance. On that subject tho an outdoor theatre in closer to the city would. Johnston, Lincoln, or even providence proper...would benefit the community greatly but in that the proximity would be closer to tweatre so competition would be greater.

Even so. Sey an outdoor theatre in so co held (not sure what tweatre cap is) 20, 30 thousand people. Tax on tickets per event would still be a net gain for the state where as the state doesnt see any of this by us crossing the boarders to go to events.

I look at it from a simple economic standpoint. like a business. In an area where starbucks or Krispy Kreme is king...do you not throw up a Dunk to try to compete?? Principle is all the same. Try to get these events in the boarders of RI to see 2 things. Money made on the ticket taxes especially from out of state spenders and the money spent in and around the events.

Saying.."oh no we are too small" or "they have one of those in CT" is just leaving the $$ on the table.

Does this clear up my opinion a little? :yahoo:

i understand what you're saying, but something like the tweeter center costs big money to build and has a huge cost on the environment (look at the expansive ocean of parking surrounding the tweeter center, we don't need that in rural south county or in any of the rural parts of RI). if it fails, it's a big sea of parking that will likely be used for another strip mall, which south county doesn't need. if anything like this happens, i'd rather see it in warwick/cranston/johnston... somewhere with easy highway access.

i would love to see more shows and events in general at the dunk. that would totally kick butt. however, i don't think it needs the additional capacity to compete. think about this... to add additional capacity, they need to basically rebuild. that's a lot of time (more than what they took with the current renovation) when nothing can happen there, possibly not even friars b-ball or bruins hockey. something like that can't be completed as easily in small stages like the current renovation. so what they did was modernize it to bring it up-to-date. now, the hartford civic center is in need of updating and modernizing. i'd say we're in a good place right now. let's wait and see what the next year or 2 have in store for the dunk. i bet we'll see more events come through. but my point has been that we don't necessarily need big name concerts to really pick up the activity, even though we had probably the biggest name concert this past winter with hannah montana (say what you will, but she brought in a TON of money to the state and city). and as i had said earlier, with gas prices where they are, we're not going to see as many big concert tours anyway. and those that we do see will likely be shorter tours sticking to smaller regions of the country, hitting more venues/cities. because of that, we might see the same band play boston, bridgeport, and providence. our biggest competition for shows is the mohegan sun arena, which seats only about 10k and the worcester centrum, which is about the same capacity as the dunk. the benefit to mohegan sun is the "all-in-one"-ness of it. you get everything (restaurants, concert, and hotel) all under 1 roof. hopefully, the dunk will be able to attract more with providence having everything within a very short walk.

Good points. The "tweeter in so co" was just a hypothetical but still think it could work or even in Johnston. that isnt what I am looking for. agree we should see what comes of the Dunk. I am pretty confident she will get booked and I am hoping that with the Convention center connected we will get some big conventions and shows like that. Remember the big electronic sale shows where you could get stuff cheep?? Havent seen one of them in a while.

Its all a wait and see and with the economy and fule prices hurting we have bigger fish to fry. I actually went by Mohegan today. What a pain in the rump getting in and out.

i've actually always found mohegan to be easy in and out, but maybe that's because i've gone so often, i know where to park (got friends who used to live about a mile from there, and their regular bar is in the casino).

it really is a wait and see game right now. the economy will be the deciding factor, though fuel prices have come down (which doesn't really matter to me as i was perfectly happy where they were).

There are many outside venues being used in RI.

Waterplace Park

INDIA POINT PARK

Conley Wharf

Ft. Adams

Atlantic Beach Motel on Block Island

Nothing as big as the Comcast Center but there are outside places right here already.

FYI -- The fact sheet (on their website) for the new Dunk has the seating capacity for basketball at 12,500 for hockey 11,000 and for center stage shows 14,000.

there is also an open house on Saturday 9/6 from 10-5 at the completed/renovated Dunk.

i'd like to see outdoor concerts at the temple of music. it's setup perfectly for it.

I think I'm going to the press event here on Friday, so I may have photos on Friday night.

I went to the press event today, I took many photos but am too tired to upload them. The Dunk looks really nice, I encourage everyone to go to the public open house tomorrow. It still has that New Dunk Smelltm.

With all of the dark gray seats you get the feeling you are walking into a movie theater. The seats are to narrow. The arm rest grab your pockets as you sit down.

Some nice improvments: lobby, restaurant, skyboxes, bridge to Convention Center. Wider concourse.

It looks like a 35 year old building with a paint job.

smaller seats means more seats... weren't you complaining that there aren't enough seats? seats at those types of place are never comfortable.
