I agree with @KJHburg  that either a hotel or residential tower is likely to be built atop the Belk Theater's 5-story glass base at some point in the future,  similar to the Hearst Magazine Tower in NYC.   In the latter case,  the original 6 story limestone-clad base was constructed in 1928.   It was supposed to be the base of a larger tower, but that was canceled due to the Great Depression.   Then,  in 2006,  40 hexagonal glass and steel stories were added to the 6-story base making a total of 46 floors reaching a height of 597 feet/182 meters.   The Hearst Magazine Tower is located at 8th Avenue and 57th Street, NYC.   Here are a couple of photos of it from the web -

^^^ that is a great looking building much bigger footprint than the spot over Carolina Theater but I do believe this base for a 30 plus story tower will not go un-used. I just hope we dont have to wait 80 years like in NY.

I can assure you most of us on this thread won't have the chance to wait 80 years to see a tower atop this theater.

I think the Intercontinental as shown in the renderings is beautiful. I hope to see it eventually built elsewhere uptown if not ultimately at this site.

I'm counting one new pane of glass that has  been added since QCxpat's post on August 28.  Hopefully more substantial progress has been going on inside the theater.

I would think 2022, really depends on clearing up what's happening with he financing. But if it was dead dead, they wouldn't be paying at least $20K a month on a crane to sit there doing nothing, because none of the work being done there needs a tower crane.

I don't know how much cranes cost to own, but if I was starting a new business in a growing city, a crane rental/operations business might be my first choice. Those guys have to be making a killing and there's pretty much always just one company doing all of it.

in boom times they are but ask about their business back in 2010 when there were few cranes anywhere.  Heede is the dominant crane operator and supplier here for sure.
