70 degrees at the end of Dec is definitely not the norm, but I'm not complaining.

I came across this cool article yesterday which goes into nice detail about the Queen City street grid:

Does anyone know when Charlottehenge occurs at Trade and Tryon?

Since the uptown street grid is titled  southwest to northeast like Manhattan, I'm pretty sure it would occur in May and July like Manhattanhenge:

It looks like the sun angle and Charlotte's street orientation prohibits a "Charlottehenge," even at winter solstice:

Thanks!  Question: because the uptown street grid is tilted beyond 23.5 degrees from north-south, it prevents any type of Charlottehenge?

Yep. 

East Trade St. and its parallel streets have a heading of 136.3 degrees (measured from the north), but the sunrise azimuth only ranges from 60.0-118.3 degrees any day of the year.

South Tryon St. and its parallel streets have a heading of 229.7 degrees (measured from the north), but the sunset azimuth only ranges from 241.6-299.8 degrees any day of the year.

I see.  Any street grid must not exceed Earth's axial tilt of 23.5 degrees to achieve a 'henge.   Bummer for uptown CLT!

Any street grid at our latitude*. If Charlotte were moved further north, then we might hit it. Imagine if we were on the equator, then sunrise/sunset would be exactly east and exactly west twice a year.

Off topic, sort of.

I once visited Mexico City.  Flew there in the morning and wandered during the rest of the day. Something bothered me while I walked. Disoriented, but not jet lag. The day was sunny but something seemed...off. I could not say what it was. Realized that my shadow was different than when I left Charlotte. Charlotte 35º N. Mexico City 19º N. Once I had the reason for my disorientation I was fine. It seems meaningless until one experiences it, my shadow is part of me.

From the KJ vault of old postcards (this was from a postcard folder) Throwback Thursday   and despite many moves I still have this postcard folder.  I used to run around school showing this postcard folder to kids up north this is NC this is Charlotte!  Of course up in the Philly area they only knew of NC down I-95.  

Picture from last week but I had a better one must have been on my laptop that crashed.  No worries will recreate this photo from South Tryon.
