This place will be great when finished... but I agree that they have a helluva lot of work to do still to meet that Feb. deadline. Looks like someone tried to take the mayor out with a sprinkler head too!!!

Here's that clip, which is better IMO as it shows more of the interior:

I'm probably the most excited person in the World about this, but I can't make either of the two videos work. RATZ!!!!

Even the myspace site won't work for me!!! Double RATZ!!!!!

Burt, on the video link I added, press the play button on the video window... it should work then.

Thanks for the info, Coupe, but there is no video window for The Nat when I pull up the site. I did manage to find a video about proposed condo development as it affects Church Hill, but I couldn't get that to work, either.

Thus, I'm having to satisfy myself with the skimpy video in today's story by Melissa at inRich which I'll post.

Here's Ruggieri's story from today's inRich:

The accompanying video dwells almost entirely on speakers. I want to see the interior work that most of you seem to have enjoyed!!

The full-service restaurant will be known as GIBSON's. Hmmmm. That's what we oldsters used to call a vodka martini with a twist. :alc:

The http://www.nationaltheaterva.com website isn't working. Since possible February opening is close, perhaps a new web site is being built. The myspace site has nothing new.

Does anybody have up-to-date info?

The web site does not have the word "theater" in it. It is http://www.thenationalva.com

As of 5:30PM today, Dec. 21st, the site is up but most sections read "coming soon." However, the Technical Specifications information has been edited and is absolutely clear.

There is a list of performers and the dates on which they will perform.

Willie Nelson Tickets are $55.

All tix go on sale 10AM tomorrow (Saturday, 12/22/07) at Ticketmaster.

I am anxiously waiting for http://www.thenationalva.com to be fully up and running -- especially the "tour". So far, all the sub headings, except Technical Specifications, say "coming soon".

Several of my contemporaries (read "mature" -- some VERY mature!) have tix for Willie Nelson. I don't think they know they'll probably have to stand up during the concert unless they arrive very early and claim a seat in the balcony.

GIBSON's, the Nat's restaurant with the classy name, will have capacity for about 100 on the ground level for fine dining and about 150 in the lower level club/lounge. The name comes from two sources -- the martini with a tiny onion, and a guitar. Johnny and Katrina Giavos will manage the restaurant and I suspect it will be their most ambitious undertaking. The famous Richmond restauranteur, STELLA, is mother of Katrina and in-law to Johnny. If they let her in the kitchen, you can be sure of some excellent Euro/Mediterranean dishes on the menu. Stella's last outpost was sold and is now known as ROWLAND on Main street in The Fan.

VIVA the NAT!!

Is the pedestrian protection walk still up along Broad and 7th streets?

Is the facade being refreshed?

Has the new marquee been installed and what does it look like? I wish it had (correct me if I mis-use the word) LED lights to announce who's playing and what acts are coming up, but I believe they are going with the old fashioned "pole and letters" system to change "now-playing" attractions on a translucent, lighted background.

Colorful awnings on the facade windows would be nice. But on the other hand, backlighted full sized windows such as seen on myspace are neat.

And what color will be used to freshen up the Mediterranean roof tiles?

Burt, the facade still needs plenty of work and the pedestrian barricades are still up.... it looks like the marquee won't be the full one you were hoping for afterall. A rendering I saw shows an updated stubby one.

Coupe, if you've got access to a rendering we haven't see, please post it. On the myspace site, it looks as if a stubby lighted portion will be incorporated in a long thin marquee like the one we have seen in 1923 pix.

Actually,

That's magic! Can you bring up some more renderings. I was unable to see the videos that you guys saw.

Actually, this version of the marquee looks like a smaller version of the one used when it was a Wilma & Vincent movie/vaudeville house in the 40's.

  • 2 weeks later...

I see on http://www.thenationalva.com that Dickey Betts & Great Southern's date has been moved to June 17th.

The http://www.myspace.com/thenationalva site also notes the change of dates in its listings, but the web site for Dickey Betts still says coming on Feb. 27th.

That myspace thing is a little difficult for this old guy to navigate. I keep getting that damned blue finger! Apparently subscribers were given a visual tour of the theatre the other day. Wish I could see it.

I just got the swankiest invitation I think I've seen in a long time. It is from Historic Richmond Foundation, the venerable organization that has preserved much of Richmond's past. They saved the National from demolition and are celebrating its reopening in a big way. The cover of the blue/gray invite is a stunning fold-out of the theatre's facade.

Titled "A Night at the National featuring The Temptations Saturday Evening the ninth of February Two thousand eight" it will be a black tie affair sponsored by Dominion and Philip Morris.

Ticket levels are as follows:

Patron -- $750. Includes 2 tickets, with valet parking, cocktail reception, access to the VIP Lounge and acknowledgment at the event and in HRF publications. Cocktail reception from 6:30 to8:30 p.m.

VIP Individual -- $225. Includes 1 ticket, valet parking, cocktail reception, access to the VIP Lounge. Cocktail reception from 6:30 to 8:3- p.m.

Individual Ticket -- $95. Includes 1 ticket to the concert and open bar. Doors open at 8:30 p.m.

For inquiries or reservations, please call 804.643-7407.

The Temptations will appear in the show beginning at 9 p.m.

The invitation adds, "Please respond by January 31, 2008."

I wish I could go, but renting a tux? Man...

I wish I could go, too. But airfare, car rental and other expenses don't fit into my budget at this point. Too near tax time!

If anyone DOES go, please fill us in with all the social gossip and descriptions of the theatre.
