Economic Development in South Carolina

Grainger is adding 200 jobs at its Fountain Inn plant.

Grainger employs about 330 at the warehouse now and plans to add between 200 and 250 jobs "and possibly more than that" to handle increased volume over time, Van Kanegan said. He said the warehouse has served the Southeast since it opened 20 years ago, but will serve the entire East Coast after the expansion.

The pay will start at $12.50 and go upward. The Greenville metro is on a roll with jobs right now despite the national economy.

^True. As is SC in general. I swear I've seen more job announcements over the past few weeks than I have layoffs.

Two companies to each add 50 new jobs in Anderson: http://www.independentmail.com/news/2008/n...dd-50-new-jobs/ And they say the economy is bad. Smoke and mirrors is all it is if you ask me. Know anybody complaining about low gas prices?

As Spartan said, it will take time for these job gains to materialize. So yes, the economy is bad right now.

  • 2 weeks later...

Spartanburg was listed as the 4th best middle-class housing market according to a recent Forbes ranking. The study looked at the country's 165 largest Census-defined metro areas for housing markets where the middle 50% was outperforming the local market as a whole. I thought it was interesting that Spartanburg's profile said that as Charlotte continues to grow, Spartanburg is becoming more of an exurb of Charlotte.

Based on what though? The best we have is anecdotal evidence.

I think the Charlotte Metro's most "exurban" sphere of influence stops in Cherokee County. If you live on the northeastern side of Cherokee, it takes about the same amount of time to drive to eastern Gastonia as it does to drive to the west side of Spartanburg to do shopping and what not, and I know that people who live there sometimes choose Gastonia.

Regional Utility Services Inc. plans to add 202 new jobs over the next few years in Spartanburg according to WYFF: http://www.wyff4.com/news/18291539/detail.html On top of that, the GE plant in Greenville just got a very large order from Iraq: http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/articl...d0BR8QD953UCA01 According to an article from GSA Business, Greenville County saw more than 20 announcements representing more than 1,500 jobs and $180 million in investments this year. In the fourth quarter alone, there were eight announcements totaling more than $67 million in investments and 600 jobs. That is a new record apparently in terms of job growth over a one year period. Great news for the upstate all around. :)

I knew the job announcements seemed to be appearing left and right, but I didn't realize we were seeing a new record! Definitely good news!

Not the kind of economic news we need to be hearing....

440 employees will be without jobs when Continental closes their SC facility.

http://www.thestate.com/local/story/622256.html

Here's another one. These announcements are never easy to hear.

Not hard to hear on this one. Bosch is offering voluntary severance to see who will take it at the Charleston and Anderson factories. If enough take it, no layoffs will be needed. Thank God Bosch isn't just closing up and leaving the state as in the case of Continental in Blythewood, where 440 will simply be out of work.

In other news, Greenville continues to buck the national recession:

Article from Greenville News talks about how the bad national economy makes Greenville's low cost of living, job gains and housing stability look even better.

Charles River Laboratories has announced it will invest $20 million and add 60 jobs as it builds a new research and warehouse facility in Charleston. The global company, which assists other companies in drug development and testing, announced Wednesday the research and production jobs will be added during the next five years.
