Hotel Fort Shelby is anoise with lots of interior construction going on. It sounds like it's just about emptied out and ready for preservation. This is a really really great project for Detroit! :)

The Griswold Capitol Park still isn't showing any signs of above-ground work. Soon, though...the garage needs to speed up to the opening of the Book Cadillac.

Thanks! Though it's very time consuming...it's worth it especially in the long-term future when we can look at the pictures and say, "remember when?" Construction progress in Detroit hasn't happened for a very long time and I take a lot of interest in documenting the transition...kinda like the photos we see of Detroit during its boom years...like the construction of Grand Circus Park and the skyscrapers of the Central Business District.

Wow, how little has changed. Despite all of the demolition in the city, Detroit is like a virtual museum in many ways, which will be good when it adds to this old stock.

Dtown, there is no way in the world that the roof of the Griswold will be made of real copper. Very few skyscrapers are built with real decorative copper roofs anymore, and especially ones that are little more than an extension of a parking garage.

Looking those pics I can't help, but think of it as the calm before the storm. The city still was pretty propersous, but the riots, the various economic troubles of the 1970's were just a few years away. In less than a decade the hotel were these pics were taken would close and many of its competitors would soon follow.

I notice on Times Square is the Detroit News Building (or whichever newspaper it is). I really like that building from the few photos I've seen. It's a shame it was demolished, it would make nice lofts, and would make a nice little spot along with the new bus thing that's getting built next to where it was.

Gangway, check out Google Earth or Local Live to see which buildings are still there. Most of them are still there actually.

Does anyone know of any good photos of the Book Cadillac without its cornice removed?
