Lansing Photo of the Day

St. Johns, Michigan (county seat of Clinton County) from above. There is something so unsettling to me about small towns being surrounded by farmlands. Kind of depressing. lol

That reminds me a lot of Pigeon, out in the thumb. I could look down a city street, and see houses, then the houses ended abruptly and turned into corn feilds. It was odd to say the least.

You know, when you drive thru St. Johns, it's a quaint busy town. You don't realize that it's that rural around it.

Well, it is the county seat and largest city (7,500) in the county, after all, and the freeway connections to Lansing make it a popular commuter seat. It's not huge, but it acts as the center for the county, so it acts larger than it really is. But, you never forget you're smack dab in the middle of a major farming region.

I think for many people in the Lansing area, St. Johns is famous for 2 things...Uncle John's Cider Mill, and the road it is on- 27. That is quite possible the most hated stretch of road by anyone traveling north/south in the state.

All of the dorms south of the river are so dang ugly. North campus is where it's at!

That view of St. Johns must be looking east. You can see the US-127 freeway behind the city. I remember when I was younger before the freeway was built, the primary connection to Lansing from the north was the divided highway that went right through St. Johns. It was a disaster, as traffic was always so heavy and the many stoplights through town caused big backups. This was the slowest and most frustrating of the 4-5 hour drive from up north. Now, with the freeway, it's almost a guaranteed 4 hour drive.

I haven't been back to St. Johns since the freeway bypass opened in like '98 or '99.

St. Mary Cathedral, the cathedral church of the Diocese of Lansing, which represents a 15-county area in Southern Michigan.

St. Mary's is such a beautiful church from the outside, but the inside is so plain and dull. As a Catholic who is still a member in the diocese of Lansing it's almost embarrassing to show off to people from out of the area.

I've personally never been inside, but have seen photos and news reports done from inside, and you'd never be able to tell how nice it is on the outside by being inside. I wonder if it was a poor renovation or if it was always ugly/plain inside?

mmm fleetwood diner--makes me want to go back "home"! Isnt it now Great Lakes Diner or was the name change the other way around?

It was Great Lakes Diner prior to 2004. It's now a branch of Ann Arbor's Fleetwood Diner.
