Detroit Casino Megathread

Haha, I only need 120 to get my bachelors in architecture, unfortunately I need to take a 3 credit elective to make the mark or I will not graduate next year. My class load actually isn't all that heavy. I'm taking design studo which is 6 credits, and two 3 credit architecture related classes.

I could care less if classes are cancelled. I've already lost a lot of tuition money by sleeping in and missing morning classes.

It's okay, there's not much more to talk about in this thread until we get some photos. I should probably be setting an example.

Yes, you need 132 credits to graduate from the architecture program here at LTU. It used to be 120 credits like every other school in the country, but about 3 years ago they tacked on a bunch of required classes that you don't really need so that they could get more money, while lowering your GPA. This forces you to take about 17 credits each semester if you want to finish your bachelor's in four years. Last semester I started off with 23 credits, but ended up dropping down to 20 by the end of the semester because I was too stressed to handle it. Needless to say, I am just about the only person I know who is on track to be done in only 4 years without taking summer classes or going an additional semester.

Combined with the ever-increasing tuition hikes, their plan seems to be working quite well. When I started here it was $550 per credit hour. By Summer 2007 it will have surpassed $700 per credit hour, with no end in sight. But not to worry, my tuition dollars are going towards paying for that ridiculously expensive new building with the green roof, geothermal heating system, outrageous color scheme, and silly glass front that turns the interior into a greenhouse, effectively baking those who dare to enter on warm sunny days.

Academically the school is very good, but with the way the cost keeps going up, one can't help but wonder where exactly the money is going to.

Can someone take a picture of that "effect"?

Here you go. I finally got around to snapping this photo I mentioned above. When the two "bookends" are filled in and the building is topped out, this will be a neat effect coming up the Lodge from downtown.

Sorry for the poor quality. The sun was out, but not in my favor.

I was bored tonight, so I poked around on the web and found this site plan for Greektown Casino Complex on the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians Official Web Site

I thought plans were to put the hotel on top of the parking garage, isn't that the lastest?

I went by the Motor City Casino site today and counted the floor height to be at 10. So, that means the photo I posted above has about 6 more floors to go in adding to its height...which is pretty significant regarding that vantage point. :)

Oh, not much. I'm not really over that way too often as the Lodge Fwy sort of acts like a boundary to my daily excursions. The other significant improvements going on over that way is the building of Woodbridge. It's really starting to take shape and I'm aware that a lot of the rental townhouses have had waiting lists for quite some time.

A year ago, when I was on the market for an apartment to lease, I couldn't get in at Woodbridge (estates) because the waiting list was so long for townhouse apartments that weren't even built yet!

But that's a whole other discussion. :)

Greektown Casino behind other 2

I agree this will hurt Greektown a bit, starting late, but in the long run I think Greektown will be the best. As the downtown area gets back to what it used to be, Greektown will get more buisness. Plus, when another big event comes to Detroit people will want to stay closest to the venue.

I was kind of surprised at how negatively Greektown was portrayed. There articles whole point seemed to be that since Greektown Casino is smaller and with less revenue, than it's the worst of the three. IMO, it's because it's more intimate and smaller that its better. Again, MGM and MotorCity look like they could be in Southfield Town Center; Greektown is easily the best of the three, IMO.

^ I completely agree.

Even the design, which isn't fantastic, is so much better than the others. Greektowns design is going for that vibrant entertainment district feel, while the others are just really boring.

Man, I just can't get use to any of the renderings I've seen of Greektown. Though this one excites me the most, mainly due to the height, I just can't seem to be all-accepting of it. That garage doesn't look too hot either. That's just me the critic though, I guess.

Hey, I remember when I posted that blurry photo of the Motor City Casino. Well, it's about topped out now and I've discovered an even BETTER view of it, similar to the one posted above. Try traveling southbound on I-75 and then taking the southbound Lodge Fwy ramp. As you round the bend, the tower rises right in front of you. It's pretty cool! :)

I like that one better. The new one is more bland and generic to me. Plus I think the old one had more details and depth (everything looks too flat in the new one to me).

I think the glass tower looks better on the old one. I like the glass box with the curved glass part better than a glass box with some funny boxes sticking out.

I think the old one is more cluttered, but I think the clutter on the bottom part makes it seem more vibrant and entertainmenty than the new one, while the tower part is still classy. I also think the hodgepodge design helps it from seeming like the same building. You go from greektown which has smaller buildings together, and then you go to a building that takes up an entire block, and if the design is too united I think it would stick out.

I think they could do better either way, but I think the older rendering is better.
