Well, there already is a tower being added to the "un"skyline at Motor City Casino. This little tower has an outstanding presence on the Detroit cityscape because it is not surrounded by anything of significant height. Therefore, almost any side of this building has a really nice view of it and it has a certain value of attraction to it just because it rises in such a unique spot.

I hope to see more highrises rise up in the greater downtown like the Motor City Casino has. It creates more of an ultimate urbane experience, and I believe it also plays a psychological role in that it makes the urban environment seem more extensive, and therefore more vibrant and continuous. :)

Very good point, often it seems that it only takes one or two pioneering highrises outside the core area and others will be much more likely to pop up. It would be sool to have Detroits skyline expand to something of more appropriate size for the metro it serves.

Detroit's skyline is expanding! The 3 casinos are helping alot with the skyline. The two I believe that will have the biggest affect are MGM and Greektown. They will be major buildings to extend the skyline east and west, or for the technical people, north and south. Can someone get a picture of the garage being demolished for Greektown?

Don't underestimate Motor City. Just look at those photos I posted. In fact, I was trying to recognize the impacts their heights will have, and so far, MGM is very minimal. Despite it having some more floors to add, I don't think it's going to be all that great, simply given the exact location and positioning of the tower. MC, on the other hand sticks out like a sore thumb and can be recognized from all directions around it.

I like the old-style art deco streamline, but I hope they've finally made up their mind. This is probably the 4th rendering they've gone through. lol First, there was a modern design with neon, though, it wasn't as gaudy as this. Then, they went to this very European French-styled design. Then, they went back to the first design with a few touches. Then, they went to the design that Giffels put out not to long ago (modern, but very, very bland), and now this. This isn't even mentioning the design for the permanent casinos and hotels they put out when they first opened.

BTW, can someone fix the link for the rendering? Both links currently just take you to the article.

I think the artist put the rocket there to show the theme they are going with. It looks like an old tail-light or something and I think it probably is another part of the building, but to show the old time car them they are going with they decided to place it out front. You can tell it doesnt belong because of the perspective.

Yeah, I think people put too much stock in renderings too often. This one is especially dubious. It's more giving us an idea of what it will look like than trying to be technically correct with every single aspect of the design. If they wanted to show us that they'd have probably released a computer conceptualization, instead.

That picture is some kind of optical illusion or something. I can see where the origonal building is, the road, and the other part, but the rocket thing is just messing with my mind...

But I just don't get where all of these designs come from, are people getting paid for this? :(

Yes, but believe me. The people that do renderings get way to into it. Sometimes the artist is also the architect though and this stuff actually DOES get built. This had to be done by someone older, as no beyond 10-15 years older than I am does renderings like this. It's too often when some architects get so far into the industry, they lose site of the values they learned in schools. Casinos don't have to look this usburd. I would have gladly taken something like beautiful Casino Windsor. It's sleek, grabs your attention with it's bright lights, but compliments the Windsor skyline.

I'm afraid that society today is too accepting of Disney architecture. If you haven't noticed, everything is fake nowadays. Architects try to mimick classical ornament by creating immitated, oversized features made of dryvit. Even the brick they put on buildings is barely an inch thick. What really differs with architecture nowadays is that most of it lacks class. Some new buildings have it though. Many of them are contemporary skyscrapers and signature buildings you see going up in other major cities, but I haven't seen too many recent examples here except for Comerica Tower, and I guess Compuware. In older days, it was the columns and masonry work that exhbited power and stability of the entity within or the city it represented. The buildings were noble, not flashy and excessive. This doesn't mean we have to ressurect architecture of the past. It would be great if we did every so once and awhile, but there are new buildings going up today that exhbit features for a reason or purpose. I call the architecture on this casino forced. Really, I don't think much was thought into it, just like there wasn't much thought put into the previous designs. I woudn't let this one go, just because "this is the way Casinos are." There are Casinos in Vegas that have really good designs as well. Why can't this be done here?

In my opinion, other than things like banks, casinos should be the classiest and most luxurious. Casinos are all about money and excess, but they also need to be trustworthy. I think if they made a genuinly classy, luxurious, and beautiful building, people would prefer it over the other places.

Why? Casinos know they are one business where people will come regardless of how they look on the outside. All the need is a flashy sign, and they've already got their customers, especially when there are fewer in one particular area. The only reason you see the likes the new new and classy Wynn in Vegas is because of the intense competition. The whole business of casino gaming is tacky and garish by nature.
