^The article in the Democrat yesterday said that Wally-mart was willing to go into discussions w/the neighborhood people but there were two things they would NOT change: the hours of the place and the size of the store. I am one for protecting the environment and Lake Okeeheepkee (such a better name than Jackson, I wish they'd change it back) BUT the folks out there have got to remember they no longer live in a rural setting, the area out there all the way to the Gadsden County line has turned urban and part of what did that was these exact people moving out there.

I agree with you there, since 90 percent of the neighborhoods that are in that area would not be allowed today under the current regulations for that part of town.

  • 2 months later...

From the Tallahassee Democrat

FountainPlaza.jpg

Fountain Plaza Coming to Apalachee Parkway

  • A new retail center is coming to Apalachee Parkway, just east of the Super Wal-Mart where Southwood Plantation Road meets US 27. Stores and restaurants have yet to be finalized but there is strong interest from national and regional retailers in the development. Southland Commercial is incharge of the development.

  • Said to be something styled after many shopping centers in the North east sector of town (TJMaxx shopping center, SteinMart Shopping Center, and others) it is slated to be fully operational sometime early 2007.

  • There is also a New Strip mall that has been recently completed in the area, Across from and west of the Super Wal-Mart on the Parkway. In a development much smaller than what is being discussed above, Pizza Hut has signed on as the very first tenant.

I went back and posted a rendering above. The design is respectable in my opinion and should go over well with those who prefer services a tad more high-end.

Note: I hope we can develop with the look of a high end community and still be inclusive to those who have less. I'd hate for Tallahassee to move ahead as a community and leave behind those who work so hard to keep it strong. The rich only deserve so much.

I doubt that shopping center will become an elite place to shop, hopefully just nice and that they'll do tasteful signage.

I'm not big on sprawl either, but that part of the Parkway is already mostly developed anyway. I've always thought that soon development in that area would fill-in from Cap. Circle to Conner. I'm just glad they've been tearing down all those old ugly junky commercial bldgs. that use to dominate that area. It had a real tacky and hodge-podge look to it.

I rarely get to that part of town, so the shops would have to include unique retail to draw me there.

If this is being built on the corner were Southwood Plantation Road Meets US 27 then what is being built across the street North of Walmart? Does anyone know? or am I turned around?

i read this and blood shot out of my eyes! the rich only deserve so much? good lord. no, tallahassee as a whole deserves nicer, better planned retail and restaurant options. i don't think there's an income requirement to go into a nice store. to buy something, yes but the clientele they bring in is a bit nicer than a pool hall, liquor store and a waffle house. not that there's anything wrong with a waffle house. :)

then again, maybe bill proctor can push for another 1/2 cent sales tax so that the underprivileged can have an allowance to purchase nicer retail items. *banging head against wall*

I'm not exactly sure why blood shot out of your eyes. No one objects to nicer things for Tallahassee, but imagine a world of new everything that you can't afford and you begin to feel pushed away. Sure I hope we can create the new jobs to keep our people up with our economy so nice things continue to pour in. My greatest concern is with the housing options available to people who can't afford a $200,000 mortgage.

This development is on the NORTH side of Apalachee Parkway, just east of Southwood Plantation Road (and Wal-Mart). It is clearly signed "Southland".

This is in ADDITION TO the building already up with the Pizza Hut in it, and the vacant lot across from Wal-Mart, just west of Sutor.

I don't see everything west of Connor Blvd getting filled in b/c the south side of the Parkway in that area has steep inclines and residential.

Of interest in the area... CITY of Tallahassee Utilities are installing new poles along Apalachee Parkway near Williams Road, well within Talquin's territory.

Thanks for the update, I get out that way rarely.

Question: Do you think they'll close up the Pizza Hut on the P'way near the Capitol? I'm not a big fan of when these fast food places "skip and hop around town." Case in point, KFC on the parkway (glad to see Moe's fill that void) and Taco Hell on Monroe. I don't eat at PH often, but I'd hate to see this site go vacant.

Oh yeah while riding on Lafayette I noticed that I think they gave the ailing beast that is Bennigan's an exterior paint job. Lord I guess that means they plan to stay around awhile more.

Thanks! I saw the "Southland" sign NORTH of Walmart I just thought maybe they were building something else on the same side that Walmart is on.

I hope that they keep the PH open downtown. Its a great place for a fast cheap lunch and you dont have to wait in line. It is always busy along with the other one on Capital Circle and the Parkway. I dont think the new one is really big enough for a dine-in, look like it will be take-out. I could be wrong.

...and if they made better decisions in life they won't have to worry about paying off such a mortgage.

^ Not everyone is born with a silver spoon in their mouth. Believe it or not, many people have made the "right decisions" in life to remain at the bottom. Our society doesn't allow everyone to amount wealth and comfort.

so we should tax the people who bust their butts, make good decisions and work hard so that the less fortunate can have more stuff? here's a news flash, most people who are "wealthy" were not born with it. our society still offers the best chance anywhere for a rags to riches story to come true.

Believe it or not, many people have made the "right decisions" in life to remain at the bottom.

I don't buy that argument because at its core it says that our system is a failure, which in my opinion it is not. Education and hard work will make anyone eventually able to pay a $200k mortgage if the right choices are also made, i.e. career choices etc.

Our society doesn't allow everyone to amount wealth and comfort.

absolutly correct and it should not, if it did, we'd be living in a socialistic society. not everyone is going to be equal in terms of wealth but i'd like to think eveyone should have an equal opportunity to do so.

these boards are getting a bit politcally charged... but that's not a bad thing because a lively discourse is key.

I'll avoid the need to reply to every sentence in this post. But in the most civil tone possible I would like to sharply disagree.

The government taxes all who earn wages in this country, even those who cannot afford a $200,000 mortgage. I believe you took it upon yourself to assume my post regarding Tallahassee's growth, and new things being too expensive for many of Her everyday people, as a political speech advocating welfare. Far be it from me to imply such a thing.

I did not say our system was a failure. But I'll boldly say it is imperfect. And in being so, there are people who cannot achieve the success you speak of simply by making "the right decisions" and doing what is deemed "the right thing". Truth be told scarcity exists to a much greater degree in today's society than ever before. This is seen in the job market, real estate, oil supplies, among many other things. Age, up-bringing, access to information and resources, and health among other things are also factors that often prohibit a person from achieving their dreams.

So before I sit here and pretend like everyone who wants a job, has a job, that everyone who makes good decisions in life inherit guarnteed success, and everyone who wants to live a life free from financial stress can, I'll say as Tallahassee grows, my hope is She'll carry us ALL along with her.

;)
