VCU may have advanced to the Final Four last spring in Houston while U of R made it to the Sweet Sixteen, but today's reporting in the Richmond Times Dispatch gives top billing for each of the home teams' performances last night to U of R.

The Spiders defeated The Eagles of American U 66-56 before about 6,600 at Robins Center.

VCU limped thru but topped St. Francis 63-57 in front of a sell-out 7,600 at Siegel Center.

Aaron Williams covered last night's game at The Siegel Center as VCU Rams defeated visiting St. Francis (of PA.)

Eric Maynor, a VCU star of 2 seasons ago was on hand to watch the game, as was Joey Rodriguez.

Now, there's something peculiar about recent attendance figures and I wish someone could ecplain it. Aaron Williams reports that "scores of students" were turned away last night because the arena was sold out (7,617.)

Then he writes that even though the arena has been expanded this year (by about 200 luxury seats, I believe), last night's sell-out was exceeded by 7,838 attendees on February 11, 2006 when the building's capacity was smaller.

Does that make any sense?

The VCU Rams and UR's Spiders will mix it up in the Black and Blue Classic tomorrow night (Friday, December 9th) at a sold-out Siegel Center.

The 8PM game will air on ESPN2.

It was an exciting game. VCU took it 73-51 before a VERY noisy crowd.

Georgia State defeats VCU 55 - 53. It is their first win in the Siegel Center.

This is unfortunate. I was really hoping for VCU's continued streak, but this may put them in "check" so that they don't get too over confident - may not be a bad thing...as long as they continue to get support from their fans in Richmond!

It seems like there's another sports area in Richmond, one SCOR (Sports Center of Richmond). They are planning to build a new 20,000 square foot steel building and field to add onto the existing turf and land owned by the company. Our friends over at BizSense has some questions for the owner in the newest Q&A about the new construction. In a short skim, I found out that it was in the planning for 2 years, and now they are planning to build. It seems like they are running pretty well with lots of money, so SportsQuest possibly could learn a few things from these guys on money :whistling: .....

The VCU Rams have had 11 consecutive sell outs at The Siegel Center (including tonight's game with JMU.)

Of the remaining 7 games (not including tonights) 5 already have, or are close to full houses.

With new configuration and angling of seats, it's said the Siegel Center could increase its capacity to about 10,000. But Shaka Smart isn't keen on that plan.

After some very early troubles, VCU pulls away from JMU by a 20-point margin, 65-45 in their 11th straight sellout at the Stu, one of only 6 schools to sell out all home games so far this season. :yahoo:

There was also the somewhat serious altercation between Troy Daniels and JMU's Andrey Semenov. But we won anyways  .

It seems every time Richmond loses a professional sports team, the next move is to step down a peg to an even lower level of play among cities considerably smaller than Metro Richmond (1,250,000.)

In hockey over the years it has gone from triple A (AHL) to AA (EHL) to A (UHL) and the next move may be even lower to an ungraded league in which Greensboro and Richmond would be the largest participating cities.

How low can we go in hockey? I really wanna see a good ECHL team or even an AHL team come to Richmond. But won't probably happen till we get a new coliseum. Even concerts are no longer seen as much at the coliseum. I believe the last time I went to the coliseum was in late 2000's to see Bruce Springsteen perform and even I was shocked he would play and even consider putting on a show in such a dump.

Richmond International Raceway it starting to celebrate it's 60th anniversary of NASCAR at the track, an event that racks up over 100,000 racing fanatics to the Metro every April and September.

Here, in an interview with RTD, the president of the track speaks about the major milestone.

Edit: Also, here's the official page of the anniversary on RIR's website.
