I assume these are townhouse condominiums.

Based on the document, they are proposed as for rent which is unfortunate.  Hopefully they don't cheap out on the finished because of this. You will also have a giant jail staring at you from your rear windows.

Does anyone know what is going on with the City of Greenville buildings across the street adjacent to the cemetery? There was a sign recently that it was being auctioned off.

I don’t understand why someone would build an ugly or mediocre building if a beautiful building could be built instead.

Take an average pre-1920 commercial or residential building in central Vienna or Prague, and it’s often beautiful, with timeless design.  And people who built it had far less money than today.

Beautiful usually costs more.  Also, what was relatively inexpensive (or the only real option)at one time, might be 'high end' now. Hardwood flooring was the norm in 1950's and '60's but today it would be considered an expensive flooring.

True but good design doesn’t cost more than bad design.  Design is a separate issue than the costs of the materials.

Georgian, Queen Anne and Federal styles have been standard US architectural styles for generations and they just include red brick walls and nothing elaborate on the outside.  Those styles aren’t expensive (brick is the same price as the “Hardie panels” that cover boxy apartment buildings), can be easily replicated (to keep costs down) and would better than the “2010 Charlotte, NC Prefabricated Box Style”.

European cities that grew quickly in the late 1800s have block after block of similar apartment buildings (in German-speaking countries, it’s called “Grunderzeit” style): the lower floors have “rustication” and the upper floors have windows with ornamentation.  Those are often beautiful, were built to quickly add housing stock and could still be built today.  They were inexpensive but have good design.
