Judging by the half dozen burnout-doughnut-skid marks on Camden this morning it seems clear this has become a new (more likely I am only just now noticing) street racing spot. 

All the more reason to close it to cars.

That is steam coming from Lake Wylie nuclear plant very visible on dry sunny days

watch these 2 parcels for upcoming high rises one may happen quicker than the other.   almost every parcel has been redeveloped or has plans announced for them except for these 2 in this corridor of S Tryon in Southend closest to uptown.  

Both are great hotel sites or maybe an apartment tower and hotel combo tower.   With only one hotel in Southend the Holiday Inn Express owned by Intercontinental family of hotels the 2 biggest hotel companies are not represented in this area.  Those  being Marriott and Hilton where most of the business travelers have their points with just saying.  

and speaking of hotels Tom Murray retiring director of CRVA said this recently about a 1000 room hotel in a Biz Journal article 10/25

"" What meeting planners like is not having to do lots of negotiations with lots of hotels. But what they don’t mind with us is all of our hotels are really close (to the convention center). That walkability is a big advantage for us.

While we weren’t developing (a hotel of 800 to 1,200 rooms), Tampa and Nashville and Austin had dramatic hotel growth (those three cities each have two to three times as many hotels and rooms in their downtowns as Charlotte, according to industry statistics.)

So, we really need to be prepared to welcome this kind of product. The problem with 1,000-room hotels is they need some subsidy. We have shifted from that strategy to doing hotels that are smaller but don’t require that subsidy. 

We did some subsidy work with The Westin (the city’s largest hotel with 700 rooms). It was really around parking and those kinds of things. The (381-room) JW Marriott (opened in 2021) was built and there’s no government money in it.

We’ll look for more opportunities like that. What we were able to do in the land swap (that gave the visitors authority control of 0.7 acres next to the convention center) was create two smaller parcels on either side of the convention center. Those pieces of land can’t handle 1,000-room hotels, so we’ll be looking for two, smaller-sized hotels. Hopefully, in combined fashion, we’ll get to the 1,000-room hotel.

And because of the proximity to the convention center, that will be a big advantage to us.""

actually this approach makes more sense for me as local hotel operators dont like giving millions of dollars to a competitor  it is easy to build and finance a 300-400 room hotel.

Jason Thomas and @CLT Development announced on Instagram that White Lodging the developer of the JW Marriott Hotel uptown has under contract the corner lot at Bland and S Tryon that I photograpphed above and hinted about.

White Lodging seems to be only building  new hotels and almost all high rises and clusters them in certain markets for example like Austin.  Look at their hotels there and how many brands and even dual brand hotels they have built there.  Hopefully this will be a tall hotel room with lots of rooms.  12 hotels 10 restaurants 5 rooftop bars in Austin alone.  I think our market could have a couple more then their one JW Marriott which is extremely nice.  

Hospitality Jobs in Austin, Texas | White Lodging, Austin Careers   they do locally based or curated restaurants and bars to be a part of the community not just a hotel bar or hotel restaurant.  Lots of rooftop bars too.  check it out.

however I said this when I moved here, and I’ll say it again, the rate and speed of how charlotte (well, “we” now.) build, is truly astonishing, coming from Greensboro which takes 5 years to build a hotel/apartment, where as here, they built an entire separate downtown in 6 years complete with density and a pure urban fabric.

just the background work through NC Brownfields program. No site clearing on it but they started this process a while back so it should be getting closer to completion.

I drove past the intersection of Remount/Ideal and South boulevard today and wondered about the former gas station, pawn/We Buy Gold store. It was purchased in April, 2023. This parcel completes an assemblage of three parcels with 2610 South and the parcel  of 125 Remount which goes to the light rail line property. This is 1.68 acres total rectangle. Owner is Summit Avenue South Boulevard Llc with address in that building address which is the long building stretching from Tryon back to Wooden Robot.

edit: I post in History topic about the many current uses of former gas stations which disappeared suddenly in 1973-74
