Richmond's Suburban Developments

According to DowntownShortPump, the new ACAC Fitness center is "beginning to take shape."

Buddy, it is MUCH farther ahead than just "beginning to take shape". The concrete elevator shaft has been built, and I drive by it every week, and also the metal frame of the structure has been built. Now I'm just waiting for that beautiful facade shown in the renderings to be built. It is expected to be around 62,000 square feet spread out on 4 stories. To see the renderings with the elegant white and glass facade, along with construction progress photos, click on the article below.

The developers are planning huge. The 420-unit apartments complex has turned out to be only a small part of what will be a massive development by the name of "BACOVA". Named rightly for the road that is now a hotspot for developers, Robert Babcock has claimed the huge 136 acre plot for himself. The entire thing is scheduled to be completed by 2017. It will involve single family homes, a 6 acre park, a road extension, clubhouses and pools for the new residents, and even a 60,000 sq. ft. office building.

The apartment part of the development progresses. :)

Yesterday, Henrico county panel members approved of the BACOVA plan by Breeden to build 420 apartments. Breeden says he plans to break ground by September.

The Ridings has been approved. The Atack Properties proposed development comprising of 650 homes in Varina came under fire because residents living there currently wanted more open space. Therefore, the originally proposed 180 acres of open space has been expanded to 312 acres -- satisfying the community's tastes. Now, the Board of Supervisors has approved it today, and we could see construction crews here anytime now.....

There's the website for the development: http://theridingsatwarnerfarm.com/

But there's no content on it yet.

Yes, I've seen that splash page before... I had always wondered what the site plan for the development was like, but now that it is approved, I'm sure the website will be started back up again!

Say, I wonder, the website and address says "The Ridings at WARNER FARM".... I wonder.... did they drop the Warner Farm, or has it just been shortened by the media to save time and effort? :P

Chesterfield's largest development is getting larger and larger.

In one week in July, 46 lots were purchased. This is just one of many statistics provided by the RTD on the massive explosion of activity in the 5,000+ home development.

Is the economy improving, or what? ;)

When UPTOWN ALLEY opens in November at Commonwealth Centre near Rt. 288 and Hull Street Road, it will offer lots more than 40 bowling lanes.

Steve Uphoff who owns a string of Circle K convenience stores (formerly known as Uppie's) already has a similar entertainment center which features bowling in the Phoenix (AZ) area.

You'll know you're there when you see a towering 29 foot high bowling pin on the roof.

(See the "Proposed: Belvidere" thread for another of Uphoff's Richmond plans.)

North-east section of West Creek being developed. It will be call the Notch at West Creek. The new road intersection Broad St. between 288 and the Henrico County line will eventually connect to Tuckahoe Creek Parkway.

The development will include multifamily housing, a medical office park, retail and corporate offices.

More sprawl.

While Capital One is beyond the Beltway, Notch'd at West Creek is on the edge of the urbanized boundary.

Blake, thanks for posting all three links.

The RTD photo, I'm pretty sure, is within the West Creek Parkway loop off of Patterson Avenue (Route 6) while Ric Biz Sense shows a layout of the development along Broad Street Road (US250.)

I'm old enough to remember that West Creek was spurred by Motorola's plan to bring 5,000 jobs to Richmond. In fact, the company went so far as to dig foundations for some of its buildings before abandoning the project.

The Goochland Gazette story has renderings of pleasant looking manor-like buildings which will contain 254 apartments.

The RTD photo is an older photo of the site of the planned Motorola plant which has now become soccer fields for one of the local youth soccer leagues. It worked out well for them since the parking lots were already built and the land was cleared and leveled.

Rumors have been floating around that The Westhampton twin cinemas might be converted to a restaurant or, perhaps, condos.

However, Regal Cinemas has confirmed that it will remain as Richmond's niche art film movie house.

Here is a picture of the odd-shaped building with its colonial facade.

Does anyone know what's planned for the SE corner of Hungary Spring and Staples Mills in Henrico?  Crews have been clearing the corner tract and it's a pretty big parcel of land.

Staples Mill Marketplace:

A Kroger Marketplace (like the one at Stonebridge on Midlothian that just opened), will be the anchor store of the shopping center, along with a few outparcels. The store might be around 124,000 square feet, around the same as the Midlothian store as well.

Looks like the outlet mall planned near Bass Pro Shops is finally coming to fruition. Craig Realty Group is developing and closing on land to prepare for construction. It will start supposedly when it is 50% leased. It appeared yesterday night on Fox News at Ten, but the reporter said construction would start in September (eager and impatient, that doesn't sit we'll with moi :P) The interview from BizSense tells all, and it might cost around 50 million....however they said it is too early to decide a final figure. The Bass Pro Shop in Hanover County, along with getting an outlet mall as a neighbor, is also near the proposed site of the new Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.  The State will construct a 45,000 s/f $10million  building to replace its current office at 4010 West Broad Street in Richmond's West End.

Stonebridge, with its new giant-sized Kroger Market, is just across the dividing line between Richmond and Chesterfield County.

The big store will get a big boost in likely shoppers when 600 adjacent apartments are completed in 2014.

Ed Slipek takes a look at new urbanism way out on Broad Street Road and gives an enthusiastic thumbs up to West Broad Village.

From today's Style Weekly:

http://www.styleweekly.com/richmond/category?oid=1359176

Just finished reading it :o :O

Quite a beefy long article, but that's good, because it does give some pointers on new urbanism. WBV, as I constantly check up on it, is always lively and well with people, and to hear all apartments over the retail are occupied, and that more than half the town homes are complete makes me really happy. I think we can say this was a success? ;)
