  1. I biked down Orange Ave (from Lake Highland) on Sunday and can confirm it is a disaster area. It is completely "busted up" in that stretch....trees down (some still laying on the ground)..stumps exposed....sidewalk broken up as well. Lots of road barriers in place. Wasn't expecting that amount of demolition. The "existing" bike lane is still there (barely). Temporary barriers are in place along Magnolia also (around Weber). No activity on Weber Street (between Magnolia and Orange) other than recently completely drainage related (I think) stuff. If the new trail section leads to (and from) the Colonial overpass bridge I'm still not sure why parking is going to be removed from the west side of Orange Ave south of the bridge overpass to Colonial. Oh well. No worries. Cheers.
  2. Kinda odd to see an Aldi in that Lucky's spot (man...they were gone in a hot second). Nice storefront for them, however. I visit Petsmart (for my herd) fairly regularly. I'll have to pop in there the next time I need some kibble for my little four legged dudes. I've been to the Aldi on Semoran a couple of times. Found a few good deals on frozen stuff. No worries. Cheers. Also....R.I.P. Maguire Pizza Hut. I did not grow up in Orlando...but Pizza Hut was a staple of my youth (in a southern galaxy far far away).
  3. Same. Seems to be the easiest route from the bridge to the trail along Lake Highland. ALSO...the Dinky Line Train mural (between Virginia and Ferris Ave) has been restored. For those who don't know..it got graffiti/tagged awhile back. I would pass by there and often see the artist painting it. Nice guy. Anyway...I don't know if they were able to scrub the grafitti off or if the artist just repainted it...but it is back...and looks like it never got altered. Just passing this info along. Cheers. JRC.
  4. Well this is good to hear (sorry I missed that). Still trying to wrap my tiny bird skull around how that is going to look (it seems so compressed and congested between Marks and the Colonial UT overpass section) and vehicles are always a problem in that area. Agreed. Once I cross Colonial (on the bike bridge) I bang a left at Livingston and "bike lane" my way back to the east most days. Still....looking foward to that Gertrude/UT connector to a future trail along Anderson. One of these days, I reckon. Cheers.
  5. FINALLY. Thank God. Riding the UT (does that sound like a medical condition?) from Lake Highland down to the Lynx Bus area has been fairly manageable. Going the opposite direction has been dodgy. Odd that they are removing onstreet parking on the west side of Orange Ave ALL THE WAY from Marks to Colonial (the UT Colonial overpass bridge route picks up just south of Park Lake Street).....but I reckon it welcomes riders into the downtown corridor this way. It is gonna be weird riding NORTH along Orange (against traffic). I wonder if the trail is just gonna be painted on the road (green share lanes) or a raised dedicated surface. I suspect the former. Also good luck keeping folks from parking on it (even if temporarily) if it is street level . Riding the current bike lane on Orange is like playing a game of Frogger most days. Yeah. Been navigating that dumpster fire for awhile now. I assumed the city was rectifying some sort of drainage issue. Who knows. Cheers. JRC.
  6. Semoran Skateway is still kicking...and deserves all the love it can get. Long live the roller rink! Cheers. p.s. Also...Kewannee Trail is right there next to the skateway (for bike riders).
  7. This is kinda how I fondly remember Colonial Lanes from days of yore (aka...only a few years ago). Cheers.
  8. Last time I looked (through the windows) I think there were about 16 lanes left. It looked like a time capsule (of the old place). I fully embrace the return of Colonial Lanes (in any form) but if they are ripping out bowling lanes to make room for treadmills and stairmasters that is just unfortunate. I kinda thought they would "build out" the structure (for the other stuff) and leave/enhance the original interior and bring it back to its former glory. Who runs on a treadmill for 45 minutes and then goes bowling? Weird. I always thought an outdoor patio/bar would suit the place and perhaps a very retro outdoor (and lighted) 70's style Putt-Putt miniature golf course would have made that corner block alot of fun. Oh well. Drove by there today. It looks like it is being gutted already. No worries. Cheers.
  9. Construction has begun (apparently) on the SODO end of the Urban Trail: https://twitter.com/citybeautiful/status/1396858535124684805 Interested to see how this "actually" connects to the Urban Trail (near Church Street). I know there is a planned route that will eventually connect the Urban Trail to a future route eastward along Anderson. We shall see...I reckon. Have a nice Memorial Day Weekend everybody. Cheers.
  10. Nothing wrong with a little weed now and again . Gimme a coast-to-coast trail and I will pack a bag of apples, alot of water, 45 Cliff Bars (and a sleeping bag) and just DO IT. No worries. Cheers. p.s. Oh...and a credit card and perhaps the odd hotel room....and the occasional diner...and maybe a few other things. Otherwise...I am quite intrigued by an Atlantic Coast to Gulf Coast trail. Looking foward to it. Bring it on.
  11. That's a pretty good write up overall. It is a lovely trail. Killarney Station is the best starting point (although the Apopka Vineland trailhead works as well). You can head east (from Killarney) on the West Orange Trail or west/north on the South Lake Trail. South Lake is a bit hilly( intially) but the ride around Lake Minneola is golden. The Hancock Road extension is a bit of a challenge (it is the steepest paved bike trail hill I've found around these parts). West Orange is really nice all the way to Apoka Vineland. The ride north toward Apopka is through a woody area (mostly). Past 441 it is okay for a about a half a mile but then turns into hot garbage along Rock Springs road to the end point. I would recommend starting at Killarney and biking either direction...or start at the Apoka Vineland trailhead and head west (through Winter Garden) to Killarney (and back). Hop off the bike in downtown Winter Garden and have a snack or a beer at a local establishment. No worries. Cheers.
  12. Interesting to see the proposed changes at Lake Eola. I'd always thought the concert "shell" area needed an upgrade (without tearing down the original structure). Also..this thread seems to have morphed into a bit of "dog-walk/dog-park" discussion. FWIW....every time I bike (or walk my dogs) past Kittinger Park I see a huge missed opportunity. There is a gigantic fenced off area between the small parking lot and the "actual" park (where the playground and F4 jet are). It is a sunken "retention" area. There is a small retention pond right beside Maguire and Lake Underhill is right behind the park (which makes that whole "retention" space seem redundant). I wish the city would truck in umpteen loads of dirt and level that area off. Then they could put a normal fence around it, plant a few trees and perhaps place in a concrete pipe or two (or other agility props) and a few benches (and also a dedicated "small pups" area) and make it the Kittinger Dog Park. The parking lot could be expanded a bit but I'd still go there several times a week. Sorry to go off topic. Please feel free to move (or remove) this post if necessary. Cheers.
  13. Thanks for the info on the Lake Druid Park single track bike trail, codypet and dcluley98. I hope to get over there soon. I live not far from there. Been focused on paved trail riding for the last few years...but I wanna get back to my bike riding roots...on the dirt. Cheers. JRC.
  14. Tunnels sure make the south end of Seminole Wekiva Trail an easier ride. I agree. Cheers. JRC.
  15. How was it (the single track) overall? Also...that new section is completed, right? I thought I'd read that the extra section (back half?) was open by now. I just sold my old Rockhopper bike (currently searching for a replacement) but want to check out the dirt trail as soon as I can. Cheers. JRC.
  16. This has piqued my interest for sure. It is quite a haul on a bike from downtown Orlando to Big Tree Park (and even further if you want to check out those fence murals on Seminole Wekiva Trail). Depending on the new trail route this might shave off 6-9 miles of riding (if your ultimate destination is beyond Big Tree). Cheers. JRC.
  17. I can't view this due to a paywall...but hopefully this is good news. Cheers. JRC.
  18. Agreed. Maybe it will in the future. Cheers.
  19. A "milk-bottle" themed crosswalk has been painted across all four pedestrian crossings at Bumby and Central. Courtesy of The Milk District board along with Patty Sheehan and designer Jen Atwell: Those are little milk bottles silhouetted into the pink blocks of paint. I like it. Any way to improve crosswalk visibility/awareness is okay by me. Cheers. JRC.
  20. Not intentionally (I believe). It's just that part of the mulch pile is right up next to the trail and is seperated from it by a chain link fence in that area. Some spillover (likely aided by the wind) caused the debris to make it through the fence and onto the trail. Hopefully someone will regularly sweep/blow that area to keep it riding smooth. Cheers.
  21. Biked a long one today...out to Big Tree Park (in Longwood) and back. I wanted to check out the Layer Elemetary School gap on the Cross Seminole Trail. It is 95% done...the exception being about a 40-50 yard gap right at the railroad tracks: The trail bends north (from the 419) and skirts along the east edge of the "mulch operation". "Road Ends" barrier posts/signs are erected at the rail lines. It appears that the rail crossing will be delayed for awhile (not sure why). The rest of it is completely finished. The "sketchy gravel path" (from the scrap yard area) is paved as well. There are "trail closed" signs once you pass Wade Street but you can continue to ride the trail west. Once you get to the RR crossing you can walk your bike across that 50 yard gap (carrying it across the actual train tracks) and pick up the paved trail again. The next 300 (or so) yards are gonna be at the mercy of the mulch pile (on any given day)....as there was a bunch of wood debris that had spilled over onto that new section of trail (at least today). Just wanted to post the update. Cheers. JRC.
  22. Ahhhh...good find. So there is some hope yet. I guess I'll keep my bowling shoes at the ready (just in case). Cheers. JRC.
  23. Saw a "for lease" sign hanging off the side of Colonial Lanes Bowling today. I don't recall having seen that before. I was hoping that place might re-open as a smaller version of its original self. Now I'm worried that it might be lost forever. Haven't found any new info online. Cheers. JRC.
  24. Fear of folks driving East on South....seems appropriate (for some reason). Oh well. Yeah...not much concern (or problems...that I've seen) at the Bumby bar area....but..neighbors can (often) be "overly neighborly". I know this also. No worries. Cheers. JRC.
  25. Yeah I know....I call that little dipsy doodle the "dump bump" everytime I skirt by it. I first saw that sign a few weeks ago returning home from a ride. I was like...what the flock? Then this image popped into my head (and does so everytime I pass it): I'll try to send an email to the city parks division about that soon. Cheers. JRC.
