  1. Anyone who’s a subscriber want to summarize the article?
  2. Rail to Holland then north to Grand Haven all exists. Would seem more practical…
  3. Lots of interesting information in here. Feels slightly rose-colored-glasses, but maybe not... https://www.crainsgrandrapids.com/news/hospitality-tourism/west-michigan-aquarium-could-drive-billions-into-economy-draw-visitors-nationally-study-finds/
  4. United restoring direct flight to Dulles would be nice
  5. The concerns for them were safety. They were walking downtown one night when one of the shootings occurred nearby which shook them up. They also feel like the problems with homeless or mentally ill people accosting people aggressively is beyond what they're willing to tolerate. Full disclosure: this couple grew up in white, affluent suburbs. They thought it would be cool to live around downtown and have now soured on it... I agree with previous commenters that this is just one anecdote, but it does beg the question of the prevailing narrative and if young couples like this who come from the burbs don't stay, while offices shift more towards suburbs, the progress made can erode very quickly.
  6. I used that flight to Chicago a couple times and it was efficient and less expensive. In and out of airport was super quick. Disappointing that service level could not be sustained.
  7. My wife and one of my kids flew back to GRR Friday and deplaned at one of the new gates. They said it looks like a big city airport now. They really liked the terrazzo floor art and the brightness of the space...
  8. My 23 year old nephew and his wife live in an apartment downtown. He told me this weekend that they're not going to renew their lease 'because of the change in vibe downtown.' She doesn't walk to her office alone anymore either. The extent of issues down there is debatable, but it's having an actual impact on people and their decision-making. As much as we all want to celebrate the best aspects of downtown, need to recognize that stuff is happening that's changing behavior and decisions of residents and visitors... Hope we're not heading back to the 70s/80s era conception of downtown.
  9. Not nearly as impressive as I'd hoped for, the more I see. Definitely feels underwhelming for $116million...
  10. Rich DeVos told in his biography and other places that he was convinced over time that allowing the DeVos name to go on projects helped fundraisers to draw in other money once people knew he was in at that kind of level. Which is the primary reason so many buildings have the DeVos name on them. I understand Dick and Doug see similarly... Will be interesting to see what transpires. I'd place a bet on Acrisure in this case personally...
  11. I'm pretty sure there's a water storage tank under there, and that site would not be buildable...
  12. So Peter Carlberg's still over there then, eh?
  13. If you honestly imagine all the people working an event like that are going to park someplace else, you’re deluded.
  14. Is there recent study data on that? Seems like it's probably 15 years ago when that theme was loud, and I'm not sure if it's borne out to be a continuing thing or not. I'm curious...
  15. Do they stay in the city? Or Walker/Kentwood/Gaines Township manufacturing areas? EDIT: missed this in the article. "...we’re proud not only to be staying in Grand Rapids..."
  16. there's also one at Bay View in Petoskey across 31. Almost had to carry my wife across that one. She froze...
  17. My bet would be an event connected to the new concourse expansion opening.
  18. I hear this may be under contract... but no idea who.
  19. you should look at JTB's most recent submission on the Alpine Twp web site. Basically a threat to default to a by-right plan that would probably be pretty popular to folks on this site... fascinating manuever. Wilder Crossings_Revised Submittal.2023.03.03.pdf
  20. heard recently from an insider that the leadership of JTB relishes battles like this, and are determined to have their way with their suburban neighborhood designs. Thus their stuff in places like Rockford and upcoming in Alpine Twp that push hard on the envelopes of size and density to cram as big of a suburban neighborhood through as they possibly can...
  21. Honest question: at these growth rates, why is there such a problem with housing?
