Totally agree. The slavery museum in Richmond has had a few false starts. Charleston has a slavery museum and the African-American History Museum in DC addresses it (I've heard that New Orleans is considering one too). If this drags out another 5-10 years, Richmond may miss its opportunity. Instead of spending the money on acquiring the Loving land, apply it to the original plan and make it a world-class experience. The last thing Richmond needs is the museum equivalent of the Sixth Street Marketplace, so do it right and make it impactful.

My prediction: this takes years to sort out in the courts. It ultimately goes to the Virginia Supreme Court, who decides in favor of the Loving family. By then, the value of the land (due to massive development in Richmond) has increased to the point that, even if the city won, it would be cost prohibitive to acquire. If the city wins, there will be another long round of litigation to determine the price of land.
  3. I know Bruce a bit. He used to sit near my family at Scott Stadium and I occasionally run into him in Charlottesville. He's a great guy and pretty funny. Whenever an opponent would commit its first penalty, Bruce would yell out, "They've been doing it all day ref."
  4. I really hope that the Regency redevelopment works as anticipated. That area could use a shot of life.
  5. Developer Greystar buys entire block in Scott’s Addition for $8.6M - Richmond BizSense Article on another mixed use project in SA. Comprises a whole square block.
  6. And the rivalry between Virginia and Carolina finds its way to this board.
  7. 360-unit development eyed in Innsbrook; Varina events venue hearing delayed - Richmond BizSense A new development in Innsbrook. More people and density in western Henrico increases the chance that the Pulse gets extended to Short Pump, so this is a good thing.
  8. Demolish the coliseum. Restore the street grid. Develop the area to support high density residential and commercial uses so as to create a twenty-four hour neighborhood in an otherwise moribund section of downtown.
  9. Just because it is a parking lot now does not mean that it will stay a parking lot. As vacant land gets scarcer and scarcer in Church Hill, the highest and best use of that land will not be parking. Broad Street frontage will always have an appeal. What is a parking lot today could easy be a string of row houses or commercial buildings in a decade. Big cities are full of quirky developments and buildings. Incorporating the garage into something else down the road could be one such development in Richmond (the vacant land next to the church screams out for a solid project).
  10. City of Richmond -- take note. Henrico has a vastly superior business climate and regulatory structure. This is a development that should have been downtown. Instead, it, and all the tax revenue it will bring, is in the burbs.

Yes! I've been hoping for the slip/bottom to connect here. Has the potential to be a destination.
  12. SW serves many (I think eight) cities from ORF and has for years. I don't specifics on passenger numbers, but they aren't trivial.
  13. Why doesn't SW have a larger presence at RIC? Is it because of it's proximity to ORF and BWI? From a network standpoint, I would think that SW would want to funnel some RIC flyers via Hobby, Midway, Love, etc.
  14. Point three nails it. My experience in the fan with landlords was negative to say the least. If high quality, modern alternatives arrive, fan landlords will have to up their game substantially and it won't be cheap.

  16. I would argue that the next "must haves" are SFO, Seattle, and Toronto for business reasons in those cities and connections to East Asia (for SEA and SFO).
  17. That's good news. If Richmond can't land it, I want it to go somewhere in the Commonwealth instead of out of state.

This is shaping up to be a nice bit of infill. The previous RVA master plan stated that filling in Main Street's "missing teeth" was a goal. I wonder how long it will be until it is achieved.

I'm really excited about this potential development. That part of Shockoe feels like a tarmac wasteland. A mid to high rise with a ground level grocery store would be a big plus for the city. This will go a long way to connecting northern Shockoe to downtown while making that stretch of Broad much more pedestrian (not to mention visually) appealing.
  20. https://richmondbizsense.com/2020/10/14/developers-drop-4m-on-manchester-site-once-slated-for-riverhaus-project/ Land changing hands. New owner states that a high rise option is a possibility.
  21. I think that once a project like this comes to fruition and is successful, the objections to others like it will fade. In five years, Opus will be an integrated part of the streetscape and no one will remember the gas station. No one will think that it impinges upon the "architectural integrity" of the Fan. Instead, they'll be gushing over how Richmond feels like a big city. Similar projects will sprout along Broad and no one will complain.
  22. Yes. A historically rich city major city with a modern economy should be Richmond's goal, not some living museum.
  23. This is probably the best domestic route RIC could add. Excellent news! Direct service to California helps on so many levels. Not to seem ungrateful, but here's to LHR next.
  24. It would be a wasted opportunity if they don't incorporate some type of residential or hotel use. It'd be a highly desirable place to live.
  25. https://richmondbizsense.com/2020/09/09/after-delay-city-planners-endorse-next-round-of-pulse-driven-rezonings/ Another step towards a denser Broad Street. Hopefully, people acknowledge that transportation investments can bring about enormous private sector development.
