  1. I generally agree with this statement. I just worry that a large Macy's or Nordstrom could be followed by an urban Target, which could be followed by Cheesecake Factory (or the like), and then other large suburban retail stores all start charging into the downtown area. Greenville then loses some local charm. For better, or worse, it just depends on who you ask. I am a downtown resident. I know there is vacant space, but I just personally hope they don't put in a Nordstrom, or an urban Target at the news site. I like the current mix of office space, with residential space, and with small retail and local restaurants and bars on Main Street. I think it makes Greenville's downtown a unique place. I personally don't mind traveling out of the downtown neighborhood to go to Target, Macy's, or one of the national food chains on Haywood or Woodruff. I know the big national retailers have every right to set up shop in downtown. Maybe it will work out for everyone, and I really hope it does. With all this rapid residential development I will readily admit that an urban Target or Trader Joe's would do very well in the 29601 area code. I never see that CVS on Washington empty, and I have heard that the McBee Publix makes more profit per sq. foot than just about any other Publix store.
  2. Be careful what you wish for. A major retailer could severely disrupt business for the local boutiques peppered downtown.
  3. http://www.gsabusiness.com/news/52223-638-storage-units-slated-for-west-end-rsquo-s-dunbar-corridor?rss=0 This will likely do very well. A needed convenience with all the apartments and condos being developed downtown.
  4. So, Whole Foods is confirmed to be building in the Towngate Property that Beach Company is building? And Beach Company is starting this project by the end of 2014? Just want to verify. Not very clear from postings.
  5. I'm glad that Greenville continues to try to "plan smart." Good online article introducing the perils of suburban sprawl. http://time.com/3031079/suburbs-will-die-sprawl/ My favorite quote: The amount of tax revenue their low-density setup generates, he says, doesn’t come close to paying for the cost of maintaining the vast and costly infrastructure systems, so the only way to keep the machine going is to keep adding and growing. “The public yield from the suburban development pattern is ridiculously low,” he says. One of the most popular articles on the Strong Towns Web site is a five-part series Marohn wrote likening American suburban development to a giant Ponzi scheme."
  6. No, the DMV is in 300 University Ridge (Khan Building). DHHS is located at 301 University Ridge (County owned).
  7. It looks like they're following the advice provided by the Sasaki master plan from '08. I think this project would be very successful at attracting knowledge-based entrepreneurs and workers. Hopefully it is a very large development. Nice work!!!
  8. Anyone know exactly where this might be? 12,000 sq. feet is not a small number. http://www.gsabusiness.com/news/50981-new-accelerator-possible-for-greenville
  9. I wonder if it will be the same plan? http://www.greenvillesc.gov/PlanningZoning/PlanningApplications/Applications/2012/NOVEMBER/DesignReviewBoard/11-01-2012/CA-12-199-100NorthMarkleyStreet.pdf
  10. I totally agree. I hope this moves along quickly.
  11. Embassy Suites + Ruth's Chris = Boring. But something is sure better than nothing. Look forward to seeing this built quickly.
  12. A great addition. I hope this company succeeds! http://www.wyff4.com/news/local-news/greenville-news/upstate-company-creates-tool-to-manage-healthcare-records-on-mobile-devices/-/9654794/23958778/-/153j4ccz/-/index.html
  13. Recent article in Gville News cites to a draft outline for the West-side/end. Does anyone have a link to this? See: http://www.greenvilleonline.com/article/20131204/DOWNTOWN/312040013/Plans-forming-help-Westside
  14. I would be interested in knowing what areas people think have a strong need. Connect the swamp rabbit through the Parkins Mill area? Sidewalks connecting Caine Halter YMCA to downtown along Cleveland Street? Woodland Way? Parts of North Main Street?
  15. Please provide input and opinions regarding potential sidewalks and bike paths. I hope the county puts the funding issue on the ballot. Better roads and sidewalks could move Greenville forward. http://greenvilleopenmap.info/WalkBikeSurvey.html Greenville County Planning Dept. will be having an open house on this issue. However, if you can't make it you can add your opinion to the online survey. http://www.bikewalkgreenville.org/greenville-county-pedestrian-bicycle-network-improvement-plan/
  16. Wow, that is fantastic. Is that brick? Great color for tables / chairs. Plantings are great, too. Those restaurants around that square are going to reap many benefits for their patience and sacrifice. Excellent job on this, Greenville.
  17. Does anyone know where the final plans for the -85/-385 project is posted? Is the city/county pushing for landscaping similar to the landscaping from -385/-85 through downtown?
  18. Agreed. Initial thought was hope for ground floor parking / overhead residential (along stadium line of property) and ground floor retail with overhead "cool / tech" warehouse type space along Augusta St., underwritten by the GLDC, as discussed on page 71-72 of the Greenville Master Plan (Sasaki, 6/2008). I hope downtown continues to push for additional residential space and knowledge business space - even if development is subsidized by GLDC. I wonder too if the city could get the parcel next to the transit authority if it grants the Cureton estate's wishes to demolish the house across the street so the children's theater could build there? That would give the city a very large parcel to develop...
  19. High speed rail project: dot.ga.gov/AtlantaCharlotteHSR Meeting documents, video, and maps are now available to review. I was not able to attend the meeting so I can't comment on which route was given emphasis. I believe Greenville would benefit the most from 'Alternative 1'. This route has a stop at our downtown Amtrak station. However, there are several alternative stops, and even several that do not go through Greenville county at all. Please review the information and complete a survey. Getting a high-speed rail stop 1 mile from our downtown would be very beneficial for our city in the long-term!
  20. I can't make the meeting. Hopefully someone, or group, in Greenville that has more influence and/or connections has this on their radar...
  21. Federal study on high-speed rail connecting Atlanta to Charlotte, with *possible* stop in Greenville. http://www.greenvilleonline.com/article/20130529/NEWS/305290014/ What are the chances our city, county, business, and state leaders will strongly advocate for a route connecting our current downtown Amtrak station to this proposed high-speed rail line? (there are six proposed routes, and only one travels through our downtown). This could be a huge economic win for downtown. A high-speed rail stopping downtown will bring tourists, conventions, and possibly skilled workforce commuters from Atlanta/Charlotte and funnel them directly to the downtown area. This benefits downtown hotels, restaurants, shopping, and business. Not to mention it could lure retirees downtown who want a smaller town, but access to shopping, etc. found in Atlanta / Charlotte. And, it will get more traffic off of I-85. Anyone know if Greenville is pushing for this, how, and if not - who to petition?
  22. (Looked for a thread for Heritage Green, but didn't find anything). Heritage Green work starts shortly. Looks like the start to a lot of work. Does anyone have a link to the overall plan?
