  1. Apparently there is a pent-up demand for a much larger dog park in the city. http://www.greenvilleonline.com/article/20130322/DOWNTOWN/303220032/Greenville-outgrowing-half-acre-Canine-Corner I don't understand why the county or city thinks people will want to put the dog in a car and drive just to a stand-alone dog park outside the city. A larger dog park in the West End park would certainly ease the congestion at the existing dog park, and would likely be more utilized by urban residents who have dogs but do not have yards. Building a dog park in a suburb, were people have large yards and do not need a park, just doesn't make sense to me.
  2. Yes, weeknights at Brown Street were usually dead. I'd sometimes go there on Wednesdays for 1/2 price martini night and nobody would be in there. I should have seen the writing on the wall when they ran a Groupon deal a few months back. Our downtown has so many restaurant and bar options now. It's a great thing, but we could hit a saturation point without additional growth in other areas. Hopefully the additional rental units being built in the downtown area will help. And hopefully Hughes will get funding to build a convention space and a hotel down at Camperdown & River St. This could bring additional weekday/night customers. For example, my wife's company held a company-wide meeting in Charlotte. This brought paying customers to Charlotte restaurants and bars between a Wednesday and Friday. Her company would like to hold this event in Greenville, but I think our downtown currently lacks a large meeting space, with additional breakout rooms, for 300 people. Her company probably doesn't need space as large as the TD Convention Center (or they simply wouldn't want to stay out near Pleasantburg and would rather remain completely downtown). I think a convention space and/or a large hotel with ample meeting space could help with the weekday business at downtown restaurants and bars.
  3. Agreed on both points. I hope they get the financing to really improve that space. Glad to hear it will be rehabilitated and not demolished. And hopefully it will spur the purchase and development of the large vacant lot across the street.
  4. Seems like there is a good amount of landscaping. I still wish there was building frontage at Church Street along the Springer Street connection. Building there would add a little more commercial / retail component to this project, add nice frontage for Church St., and also block the Church St. traffic noise from the residential units in the interior. The traffic noise from Church St. can get significant, and I believe it could impact the value of any proposed "Class A" (i.e. luxury) apartment units. Admittedly, McBee Station seems to sell well despite the traffic noise; however, McBee Station has significantly more neighborhood retail options and is also a shorter walk to downtown. Overall, this is a much, much better proposal than Walmart.
  5. "Listening to the questions and concerns of many participants." This seems like a pretty vague statement. How many people were at the meeting? Did participants just have questions, or did they clearly express signficant concerns and objections after being furnished with the developement information? I do not believe one email represents the opinion of a neighborhood. I own a home in alta vista, my residence is a lot closer to the proposed plan, and I hold a very dissimilar opinion. I would hope that Parcel B could also include a parking garage, and Parcel B could include retail frontage on Church St. I'm not a fan of large and open parking areas. But that is only my opinion. I hope the city will not ask Beach to amend the proposal based on one email that may, or may not, represent the opinion of the local residents. Will not the city call for a public hearing / meeting if it wants to hear concerns and objections in the neighborhood?
  6. Does anyone know if the city has plans to build a parking garage in the West End?
  7. I've been hoping for a large Strossner's like bakery somewhere in the west end for some time (Rhett St.?). Large, with parking available (a fullscale dehli would be nice too, but Rick's should fit that bill). A bakery at "NOMA" would be hard to access unless you're staying at the Hyatt, or live / work within a few blocks. Parking is difficult there, but maybe that bakery will be small and just want to cater to the North Main day-business & tourists.
