  1. Yeah, we certainly don't need to preserve the cookie-cutter more recent buildings, but the historically significant structures must be preserved - especially the Babcock Building and the building designed by Robert Mills. If we lost the Babcock Building it would be a tragedy. They also need to give it back its silver roof.
  2. I think those buildings need to be preserved. If they're destroyed there is no getting them back.
  3. I had lunch there on Monday and it was good. I also thought the prices were very reasonable.
  4. Village at Sandhill "so close" to Richland? Have you ever been to Columbia?
  5. The Belk's at Dutch Square does good business; there is no reason for it to close.
  6. It's nice to have some good economic news to report. I'm sure the jobs at the biotech company will be of the high paying variety.
  7. Gee, what a time to try and find developer(s) for this project.
  8. Has anyone checked out the Aspyre website and looked t how much those apartments will rent for? They are way out of market range as far as I'm concerned.
  9. Blanche Dubois' flower shop starring Robert Young and Jane Wyatt.
  10. Blanche Darby Florist? How syrupy can you get?!
  11. That was the Greenbax store. I think the Green Stamps store was in Five Points.
  12. The Egg Roll Station tore down the old Hardee's and built a new place. Silver City is it in the Columbia area, unfortunately.
  13. We talked about doing a forum meet up there a while back. Maybe we should try that again.
  14. Fusion is now called "Ice"; I saw the sign when I drove by last night. I have no idea if it's still a gay bar, but judging by the new paint job, I suspect it isn't.
  15. The Springhill Suites isn't looking as bad as I expected; at least it isn't stucco like most suburban motels.
  16. I'm not really into buffets, but M Vista has the best Chinese Food/Asian Fusion in town, IMO.
  17. They can keep the suburbs. Mangia Mangia couldn't pay me to drive way out there.
  18. The New York Times had this interesting article about Columbia as a microcosm of the country's economy. NYT
  19. I actually think moving the Nick will go a long way to increasing nightlife on Main Street. Not only will the new location have 2 screens, but it will also have a piano bar, which should draw a nightly crowd. I know the city has pledged $350,000 to the Nick's move in 2008 and they need to do even more in '09. I see that move as the number one key item after the streetscaping on Main.
  20. I'm so glad to see the improvements at the Fairgrounds and I can't wait for the University to buy the Farmer's Market property. Slowly, but surely the area around the stadium is developing into a cool environment. Once the economy improves hopefully even more of the warehouses immediately around the stadium will be converted to other uses.
  21. ^ Yes it would; and a sculpture, too.
  22. I found a picture of the Steel Building/Hippodrome after it moved to Columbia.
  23. I've always like Elie's, too, but they would do a lot more business in the Vista.
