MacArthur Mall REDEVELOPMENT (Proposed/Planning) City of Norfolk
urbanvb replied to carolinaboy's topic in Norfolk
I have fond memories of the mall as well including a lighthouse print I purchased from Z Gallerie. Those were good times. -

This article is about the state of the malls in the area. Personally, I find it a little sad that most malls are perishing while only the strong survive. I was in Lynnhaven yesterday and was surprised at lack of people in this once bustling center. Most people, myself included, buy a lot things online these days. https://www.wavy.com/news/local-news/state-of-the-mall-2022-no-more-than-2-in-hampton-roads-expected-to-survive/

The city may purchase the Schooner Inn as part of Rudy Loop redevelopment. https://www.pilotonline.com/government/local/vp-nw-schooner-hotel-1206-20221206-vqv273phxjflnpkhtghw3jypaa-story.html?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Inside Business&utm_content=6321670421064&smtrctid=

Blah. I know that center very well. It would very neat if the city would rezone that area for mixed use. It could be a great small town center type development for that sea of suburbaness.

Their funding dried up? /sarcasm

The state of the region address is a bit negative for the region. As a whole, the entire state is lagging where our southern neighbors are flourishing. https://ewscripps.brightspotcdn.com/55/2b/ee7c507c404e95923de62b941e23/state-of-the-region-full.pdf

Back in the day, Norfolk had some posh department stores located downtown.

A great time for the city. Considering other postings in the development thread that’s over 730 great paying jobs in the last couple of months.

Think I rode by this site today. Work is underway.

A local firm is expanding with 40 new jobs average salary $95k. https://www.pilotonline.com/inside-business/vp-ib-vectrona-expansion-0822-20220817-ibxzbuslyvfgjabbh2737d2pjq-story.html

Maybe they’re “afraid” of development across the street at Pembroke Place. To be sure there is room enough for both to exist, to expand and build. I just don’t get it.

A bit off topic but did your dad work for Sovran Bank? I worked their retail credit branch way back. Good times.

Time for that new tower. We’re still awaiting….
-
Is this still happening?
-
If my memory is correct there were too many environmental impacts along the route and the city finally gave up.

Gee, I opened this thread hoping for some-thing. Lol. Let’s play ball folks…

Years ago the owner of that parcel swore to never sell his property.

That’s a great area for mixed use.

I’m pretty excited about Fort Norfolk. Looking good.

Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Virginia Beach are contributing $5 million each for a total of $25 million to construct a 119-mile fiber ring through the cities as part of a larger effort to expand ultrafast broadband service in Hampton Roads. It’s great to see some competition to Cox who mostly has a monopoly on internet service. https://www.pilotonline.com/inside-business/vp-ib-broadband-fiber-20220317-x5tujjrj7zdhzndv7tfsfuflm4-story.html
