  1. The article did not mention Hubbell Lighting. Or any reasons that those firms bolted for Greenville. (and Charlotte)
  2. The Live on the Green group is bringing Lee Brice to Barnet Park October 17. Depending on the Weather this concert should bring a much bigger crowd than the solo Bruce Hornsby performance last year. Glad to see this.
  3. This past week I talked briefly with a County Council member and a city employee involved with economic development. They both truly believe that the Spartanburg Futures Group/Economic Development folks presented CH2M Hill with a better incentive package than did Greenville. It is my understanding that Johnson Development also made a pitch to CH2M Hill to build offices in downtown Spartanburg. Corporate big wigs chose Greenville over Spartanburg for a number of reasons. Recruiting young engineers being the primary one. Greenville has also been known for their engineering segment for years. I believe when you add that to county per capita income and a higher percentage of college graduates we fall short. I personally would much rather work in downtown Spartanburg than some corporate office park in Greenville. (even if was young)
  4. Glad to see repaving on 5-85 from business 85 to the city limits. Will look and ride much better. Now if SC DOT will keep it mowed this summer.
  5. I know we have Willy Taco near downtown, but I think a Mexican restaurant could make it at Morgan Square. A Salsa's or Taco Boy would be great. A Tex/Mex like Bronco's should also succeed. The Sandwich Factory site or Abby's space are waiting for something to move in.
  6. I really appreciate what the group of 100 hundred does for this community. I know the pipe thing is not a sign. Just some of their projects seem to get more bang for the buck. Guess I should just be happy they give their bucks.
  7. The Pocket Park is a great addition, but I believe this type of sign would be much better at some of the gateways into the city. WELCOME TO SPARTANBURG instead of our Disney type signs or the pipes looking structure near Mary Black Hospital. Just sayin....
  8. Wish someone would hurry on this or it will be too far gone to save.
  9. I communicated to my city council member about a stricter sign ordinance. Unfortunately, Cate Ryba is leaving. Even places like Rock Hill have a 'better' restriction on signs. My big beef was the QT on West Main near downtown.
  10. The new Wofford venue will be great for recruiting and the fan experience. But updating Ben Johnson arena seems to make more sense to me. There goes good football tailgating spots for us regular folks that do not give the school big bucks. Jerry should add a swimming pool complex to his building. That would really benefit the entire community. THANKS for the above post Westsider28.
  11. Evidently NCG Cinemas is locating in the old Carmike location at Hillcrest. They are holding a job fair there October 17 and 18. That is good news for Hillcrest and eastside Spartanburg.
  12. GREAT! My wife was the one that went by the old location and evidently did not read the entire sign. Thanks.
  13. Was looking forward to Lee's chicken (near Hillcrest) for an easy dinner tonight. Sign said 'CLOSED'. Darn it, I like their chicken. I know it has been their for at least 10 years.
  14. As mentioned above a group called Live on the Green LLC is promoting it's inaugural concert at Barnet Park September 20 with Bruce Hornsby. Bringing more live music to Barnet Park on a regular basis is long overdue and is good news. But according to the Herald-Journal this is a solo piano performance . Can not imagine that his entire band would not play at a venue that can handle close to 5,000 people. This type of act seems better for a more intimate venue. Maybe Green LLC will bring in acts in the future that draws college students, or even old guys like me who like to hear performers with a great band.
  15. This past weekend I was traveling from Georgia up I-85, and soon after crossing into Spartanburg County the amount of litter in the median increased significantly. Does anybody know who is responsible for cleaning up all this trash? I would guess it is SCDOT. Also, when we exited on 5-85 (Pine Street) off of bus-85 the concrete divider for about a mile is full of weeds. It is a shame that thousands of dollars were recently spent to beautify this interchange, but the road before you get to city limits looks like crap. Does anybody know who I call about this? I think it would be the county. Thanks!
  16. Speaking of Hub Diggity Dog. A couple of weeks ago I heard the owner (believe his name is Bob) tell a customer he was moving the business to Boiling Springs. Then I was told this weekend that a restaurant was moving into the Hub Diggity Dog space, and now Bob is looking at vacant buildings between Spring Street and the old Abby's space. It is my understanding that one of the Main Street Challenge winners Tirado’s Empanadas and More is moving to the corner of Dunbar and Church. (facing Church) This will definitely increase foot traffic in that area and should help Growler Haus. Maybe one of you guys has more information.
  17. Just saw on the city's web site that the finalists for The Main Street Challege are: Tirado’s Empanadas & More, a restaurant that currently operates out of the food court at WestGate Mall; Scoops and Ladles, a restaurant featuring ice cream, sweets, and soups; Paisley Paw, a pet boutique; Project Hub, a “makerspace” concept; and the Health in Hand Juice Bar. The winners will be announced May 22 at The Showroom/Hub-bub.
  18. Please see my post from Jan. 2. I still think you are out of touch. My son is 15 and we live between SHS and Pine Street School. He rode his bike to school a lot in the 5th and 6th grade. He was not the ONLY kid to walk or ride a bike. None of my eastside friends are jealous of Dorman. We lived in Atlanta for 20+ years and think SHS, McCrackin, and Pine Street are great!
  19. I believe that City Hall also has many issues. Why not build a new city/county complex? I guess that the current county administration building is in good shape and should not be in the mix (maybe in 20 years?)
  20. Really? The 50s? I live a mile from SHS and have a kid going there. He has walked home many times, and has ridden his bike to some practices. I have ridden my bike there at least 10 times for different reasons. I know a teacher that walks or rides his bike to work at SHS. Yes, more kids probably walk than bike because of the cool factor you mentioned. Personally, I love the location of SHS and think the building is great, especially considering it was built in 1960. Plus, the attached Freshman Academy has some new construction. I was pissed when they redid the athletic fields and got rid of on campus baseball. But with the addition of the 9th grade 3 years ago, plus Lacrosse (JV and varsity) the school needed more practice fields. Of course if the good folks of this county are really worried about tax money they would combine the 7 school districts to 3 or 4. Then maybe a sport complex (baseball, football, track) could be shared. Most places do this kind of stuff. Maybe I am old fashion, but I prefer a school in a neighborhood with sidewalks and residential streets opposed to an interstate and a 4 lane highway.
  21. Looks great. But city has a commitment to fund a new westside park first. Plus, Duncan Park is only 2 blocks away and under utilized. I think it would have been safer, easier maintained, and draw more people to have the skate park, dog park, and a playground all in one location.
  22. Great news! My wife saw the sign today, and thought the name should be reversed. "Taco Willy sounds cooler" I am just happy to have a fresh mex place in town.
  23. Wofford's homecoming street party is also that Saturday. The Root Doctors are playing at Morgan Square 5:00 PM - 10:00 PM. I have been to Growler's a few times. They did a good job with the remodel and the staff friendly/knowledgable.
  24. I understand the history. But it is not downtown, made of wood and would cost the city and/or district seven millions of dollars to renovate and maintain. There are many reasons why places like Wofford, Greenville, Greenboro NC, Atlanta, etc build new stadiums (not only baseball). Just do not see hosting something like the SoCon tourney when you have state of the art stadiums competeing.
