  1. Guess it is the old Indian Food sign that I saw, that was there prior to Lawson's Fork. Great news.
  2. Heard that Growler Haus (old Cigar Bar) is opening up this weekend. Looking forward to their success.
  3. Unfortunately (for me) the old Lawson's Fork Cafe has an Indian restaurant sign out front. Do not remember the name. Maybe the Fresh Mex eatery that was discussed will be located somewhere else.
  4. Have lived in Converse Heights for 9 years and speeding IS a problem. More 4 way stops would be helpful to slow down traffic. When I lived in Atlanta my area had speed humps and small traffic islands. A car could easily go 40 MPH through the islands. The speed humps did the trick; slower traffic and less cut through. Plus, humps are much cheaper than islands or mini-roundabouts. Yes, they are a pain, but I believe that they do slow down traffic.
  5. Last night a friend told me that the new 'upscale' Mexican eatery was going to locate at the old Lawson's Fork building on East Main Street. As I said before: hope this happens!
  6. My source would not confirm a location, but said specifically it is not Mexico Lindo.
  7. Heard a rumor that an upscale Mexican eatery is coming to east Spartanburg (not downtown) Hope it happens!!!!!
  8. It's offical, there is a Growler Haus sign at the old cigar bar!!!!
  9. Had a slice of pizza at Wild Ace Pizza Pub this weekend. Thought it was really good. Nice decor, but need to work on sound system. Wish them well!!!!
  10. This past Saturday night I spent the night at the Marriott because my wife had a group of ‘girls’ visiting from out of town. I was pleasantly surprised that every restaurant and bar I walked to was crowded. Planned on trying the Back Porch for the first time, but too many people at the bar. Delaney’s and Main Street Pub both were packed with good bands. The Marriott was extremely nice and an exceptional staff. The negative part was that the Marriott is too expensive (for me) and the walk down Church Street sucks and feels unsafe. I think that the city needs to invest in streetscape improvements on Church Street. Still also believe that downtown can support a new limited service hotel; considering our colleges, new sports venues, (Middle Tyger softball complex, Upward’s volleyball complex), plus our event venues like the auditorium, Barnett Park, and Indigo Hall. An $80 a night Holiday Inn Express or Hampton Inn would be a good alternative.
  11. Has anyone dined at the BacK Porch? I believed it opened up last week.
  12. I also do not use the swim center. It is my understanding that some high schools still use it for swim meets. Not sure what they will do because the new YMCA has only six 'short' lanes. (Middle Tyger is much better for meets) I believe we should close the center and plan a new one when the county and county schools come on board. Could build it on the north side and get Wofford to contribute money to use it. (they do not have a pool)
  13. Not actually a place to eat, but the Cigar Bar closed this weekend. Heard it was a lack of business. I will miss going there. I do not smoke but like a brief time around cigar smoke.
  14. Monsoon Noodle House had a soft reopening last night. Open today for business!!!!!
  15. I thought that the editorial made a lot of sense. With SC strict annexation laws the county and city should work together on projects like this. The seven school districts high school swim teams would also benefit from a new facility. Unfortunately, the new YMCA's lap pool will not accomodate large swim meets.
  16. The rumor I heard is that it will be a casual restaurant; possibly a regional chain. I would love to see a Taco Boy or Carolina Ale House. Maybe this time the location will succeed.
  17. Amen!!! Even a chain restaraunt like Chili's would be better. Sent Cate Ryba (city council person) an email asking if city could require (or pressure) QT to limit signage. As in 8 feet high and more attractive than the normal gas station. Why couldn't traffic engineering deny this project when it first came up?
  18. It is great news, but I blame the trumped up news on David Britt. I thought that his remarks two weeks ago made it sound more than it is. His statement of 'good paying jobs' made me think more like $35,000+ a year. Although, I am very grateful..
  19. According to the Spartanburg H-J, several developers including Longleaf Holdings are planning on turning the building at 249 Magnolia Street into 27 studio/one bedroom apartments. Walking distance from VCOM. Hope this actually happens!
  20. I agree 100%. Also looking forward to a Nu Way burger. After the city council meeting I talked with one of the owners of Delaney's. (not Kevin Moore) He said it would kill his business. When I disagreed, he got really pissed at me. He said if I did not like second hand smoke, I should not come into his business. He also said that 50% of the people that come downtown are smokers. When I said that maybe with the new law more folks will venture downtown. He then got more pissed off. When I suggested that most people visiting Spartanburg expect non-smoking, he said Delaney's did not cater to visitors. I guess those people here for weddings and college events never go into Delaney's??? Kevin and Harry are great behind the bar at Delaney's, so I will go back.....even more so after September 1.
  21. Attended Jazz on the Square this past Friday. Good family type crowd. After that had dinner at Lime Leaf for the first time. Good service, great food, non-smoking; plus the place was crowded. Then Sunday evening went to Brick Oven pizza for the first time since it was Sonny's. A little disappointed, calzone was just OK, and the wait staff was not overly friendly.
  22. Is Myokos still smoking? I try to avoid places with smoking sections, and is one reason I love downtown Greenville. You do not have to pick and choose. The ESH guys probably went to the Piedmont Club to avoid guys that wear baseball caps, cuss, and smoke cigarettes in a relative nice restaurant. Not being a snob.........just like a positive casual dinning experience.
  23. I still say downtown needs good, fresh Mexican. Seems like Taco Boy would have been a great fit. I guess they decided not to take a second look at Spartanburg.
  24. It was a great event, and these are wonderful additions to downtown. We all need to support these guys.
  25. Not sure why you say speed humps do not work. They definitely reduced speeding and cut through traffic in my Atlanta neighborhood 8 years ago. Some other neighborhoods tried small traffic islands that did not work. Four way stops help, but people seem to speed between blocks and roll through the stops. Speed humps can also look attractive, like the ones beside First Pres Church in Spartanburg.
