  1. I love the “Ally” sign in PRIDE colors.
  2. Nearly 200 Wilson leaders and stakeholders gathered Thursday at Barton College for the first Wilson Forward annual meeting since 2019. Johnson served as keynote speaker, delivering some harsh realities exposed by recent demographic studies as well as some opportunities for Wilson to thrive. “Unfortunately the demographic dividends are not equally distributed in the state. In fact, we had about 903,000 people added to the state of North Carolina population between 2010 and 2020, but 47% of that growth was in two counties — Wake and the great state of Mecklenburg,” Johnson said with a laugh. “Sixty-four percent of the growth was in five counties, 84% was in 10 counties and 95% of the growth was in 15 counties.” The remaining 5% of growth was spread across 85 counties, including Wilson. Johnson pointed out that Wilson isn’t ranked among the 65 counties in the state where deaths exceed births, but the census revealed a 3% decrease in population throughout the county. “Your situation would have been much worse without international migration coming here,” he said. “I don’t know what your politics are on immigration, but if you take those people out, you’re in deep yogurt. Deep, deep yogurt.” https://restorationnewsmedia.com/wilsontimes/news/professor-wilson-should-tackle-demographic-challenges-head-on-2683526?utm_source=Daily Briefing &utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=May2022
  3. I can’t wait to see Durham’s Skyline late decade approaching the city from the north along I-85.
  4. Absolutely massive residential development. It’s so Far East in Johnston, it’s closer to Goldsboro than Garner.
  5. Cone Health will offer primary care among other wellness services at the new facility in Welden Village, just across N.C. 66 from Cone Health MedCenter Kernersville. https://www.bizjournals.com/triad/news/2022/06/08/cone-health-to-build-facility-kernersville.html

  7. North Hills skyline is developing nicely, but can’t they build tall beyond boxes? How about some spires, domes, jagged towers?
  8. Federal offices are accelerating return to offices in the DMV, with many now requiring employees to be in office at least two days per week
  9. Yes, but they are still novel to Winston. Moreover, it’s a great way to test more daring cuisines in the city that are underrepresented, such as Ethiopian, Laotian, Cambodian, Texas bbq, and Korean.
  10. Is there a current pic from this vantage point to compare?
  11. I wonder how much ancillary development will occur in the Monclure and New Hill areas, including residential development.

  13. FedEx is planning to open a large distribution center in a growing area of Chatham County. FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) plans to operate out of a 338,000-square-foot distribution center in the small community of New Hill, a company spokesperson said. The facility – which is slated to open in early 2023 – sits along Pea Ridge Road near its intersection with U.S. Highway 1. https://www.bizjournals.com/triangle/news/2022/04/04/fedex-chatham-county-distribution-center-vinfast.html

  16. The 7,500-job manufacturing plant is expected to begin construction this year, and VinFast projects the facility to start pumping out vehicles in July 2024. The expedited development timeline will mean Chatham County will need to be ready for what will be one of the most significant economic development projects ever announced in the South. "The county's already been preparing for this," said Karen Howard, chair of the Chatham County Board of Commissioners. "We were anticipating we would have something land at all of the megasites, and with that would come other industry and residential residences." The manufacturing facility will transform Chatham County, which is today home to over 76,000 people. The community has for years been known as a hotbed for home developers, but lacked the industry heft of nearby Wake and Durham counties. It's not just the 7,500 VinFast jobs that will impact Chatham County. Suppliers often locate close to an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) so as to cut down on logistics costs. According to research from the Economic Policy Institute – a nonprofit think tank out of Washington, D.C. – every 100 manufacturing jobs for products like automobiles support another 744 indirect jobs. https://www.bizjournals.com/triangle/news/2022/03/30/vinfast-plant-to-transform-chatham-county.html
  17. BY BILL HORNER III, Publisher A Vietnamese vehicle manufacturer which wants to build 250,000 premium electric SUVs per year in the U.S. may be close to finalizing plans to locate a plant in Chatham County’s Triangle Innovation Point megasite. VinFast, a private automotive startup founded by billionaire Pham Nhat Vuong, is closing in on an agreement to invest up to $7 billion in a manufacturing plant at Chatham’s Triangle Innovation Point — one of the county’s two megasites. If it happens, VinFast would mark one of the largest economic development projects in North Carolina’s history. As first reported by the Triangle Business Journal, VinFast would produce both electric batteries and vehicles at the site. Unnamed sources told TBJ that VinFast plans to occupy more than 1,000 acres in Triangle Innovation Point. An official announcement from Gov. Roy Cooper’s office is expected within the week. The company’s full build-out will eventually bring between 10,000 and 13,000 jobs to the TIP site, the 2,158-acre life science and advanced manufacturing park formerly known as the Moncure Megasite. It’s located in southeast Chatham close to the Lee County line. https://www.chathamnewsrecord.com/stories/vietnamese-manufacturer-may-be-picking-chatham-county-for-multi-billion-electric-vehicle-plant,12778
  18. Construction crews are hard at work building a new FedEx Ground distribution center south of Wilson at the junction of N.C. 58 and U.S. 264. “We continue to experience significant package volume due to e-commerce growth and are optimizing the capacity of our network to meet growing demand for our services,” FedEx said in a statement. “The site was chosen because of its ease of access to major highways, proximity to customers’ distribution centers and a strong local community workforce for recruiting employees.” While many economic development projects are revealed with fanfare, FedEx Ground opted to limit the announcement to a prepared statement following a request from The Wilson Times. The statement indicates the new 259,000-square-foot facility is set to open in the fall with a mix of full-time and part-time employees. https://restorationnewsmedia.com/wilsontimes/news/fedex-expected-to-create-200-jobs-7187036?utm_source=Sunday Selects&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=March2022

  22. I think NC overall has a good highway network, but maybe it’s because I live in VA now, which seems to have stopped building new freeways and interstates decade ago. However, NC needs a Charlotte to Wilmington freeway, as well as a Raleigh to Outer Banks freeway. I would also like to see US 64 converted to a freeway throughout the Piedmont, as well as US 52 From Salisbury to Wadesboro.
  23. The local incentives will come from Cabarrus County and the city of Concord, and are expected to be approved in the near future. Documents show that Cabarrus County beat out locations in Rock Hill and Fort Mill for the project. Kroger Fulfillment Network LLC was the grantee for the Job Development Investment Grant from the state. Harris Teeter Inc. and Fred Meyer Inc. are listed as affiliated entities on the JDIG summary document. The exact location of the facility was not announced today. The Concord Planning and Zoning Commission approved the rezoning, annexation and a special-use permit for an industrial project under the codename Project Independence earlier this year. Commission documents show that project includes a fulfillment center of around 198,500 square feet for an unnamed company. The site for Project Independence is just over 53 acres at 227 and 233 N.C. Hwy 49 South, which is just south of Concord. https://t.co/0xMdGPn6Xf
