Hi All,

You may remember the other day I was asking for restaurant suggestions for a meet-up. Well, I am happy to say that we ended up getting the performance space at AS220 which is next to their new cafe (thank you AS220!).

Yes, we are having a "Geek Dinner" THIS Wednesday. Please join us, and/or tell anyone who might be interested about it.

Topics of conversation will vary as they will at any gathering of geeks, but many of us will be talking about AJAX, Mashups, Startups, and Web Services.

Read more about the event and RSVP here--ProvidenceGeeks.Wordpress.com (please be sure to RSVP in the weblog's comments so that we can get an approximate headcount).

Hope to see you there!

PVDJack

A couple sharp eyed members have noticed the Calendar link up at the top of the screen. We've rolled out a calendar to help track local events. This will be especially helpful for tracking zoning meetings, and neighbourhood meetings, and design review meetings and the like, but members should also feel free to post more social events such as gallery openings and band dates and the like.

Currently there is only a Rhode Island calendar, but more will likely be added. Use the calendar jump drop down menu to ensure you're posting to and reading the correct calendar.

New Members (those with 10 or fewer posts) are not allowed to add events to the calendar. Feel free to submit events to this thread and I can add them to the calendar. Regular members (those with 100 or fewer posts) can submit events to the calendar, however they go into a moderation queue and I have to approve the events to make them show. Members+ (those with more than 100 posts) can post directly to the calendar without events going into a queue.

xml.gif There is an RSS feed of the calendar available here. The RSS feed exports up to 50 items for the next 31 days. The RSS feed will update itself every 4 hours to display any items added/changed/deleted in the previous 4 hours.

If anyone finds any bugs in the calendar, or needs help posting to it, please post here. If you're overwhelmed by the technology, or just plain lazy, post your event here and I can add it to the calendar.

A great (and necessary) service for the "next step" for Prov-UP. Thanks for activating this!

- Garris

Hmmm.... I'm logged on and trying to submit an event but keep getting this error:

"Sorry, but you do not have permission to use this feature. If you are not logged in, you may do so using the form below if available."

As a sub-100 post member am I suppose to be submitting the event differently?

Thanks,

PVDJack

RI Statewide Historic Preservation Conference:

Outlooks and Opportunities on the Waterfront

Rhodes-on-the-Pawtuxet, Pawtuxet Village

Saturday, April 8, 2006, 8:30am-6pm

The 21st Annual RI Statewide Historic Preservation Conference will take place at Rhodes-on-the-Pawtuxet and sites around Pawtuxet Village on Saturday, April 8, 2006. The day-long conference will offer a variety of workshops, lectures, tours, and discussions, starting with a keynote address by Ann Breen, co-founder and co-director of the Waterfront Center.

Individual sessions include a panel about the visual language of the waterfront; a presentation of stereoscopic 3-D images of 19th-century Rhode Island; discussions about waterfront recreation, public access, and private development; a showcase of recent preservation tax credit projects; walking tours of Pawtuxet and Edgewood neighborhoods; a boat tour of upper Narragansett Bay; and a bus tour of the industrial empire of the Sprague and Knight families.

The conference is a great opportunity to learn about new initiatives, discuss issues, and to network with experts in the field of historic preservation. The registration fee is $35, which includes morning coffee and snack, lunch, and the closing reception.

For more information about the conference, organized by the RI Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission, please visit our website (www.preservation.ri.gov/conference). Conference programs are available to download at www.preservation.ri.gov/pdfs_zips/conf_pdfs/06program.pdf. If you have any questions, please contact Conference Coordinator Janet Balletto at (401)732-6335 or [email protected].

CALL FOR PROPOSALS :: Provflux 2006

Providence, RI

June 1-4, 2006*

(proposal deadline May 1st)

People Interested in Participatory Sculpture (PIPS) is pleased to announce its third annual Provflux, a weekend-long event dedicated to artistic and social investigations in psychogeography and intervention. Part festival and part conference, it brings together visual, performance, and new media artists, along with writers, urban adventurers and the general public. Events will take place throughout Providence to explore the physical and psychological landscape of the city.

PIPS is currently accepting proposals for experimental projects in contemporary urban exploration and public art. The projects can take any form, providing it engages notions of urban space and the public's interaction with it. Interventions, actions, urban installations, presentations, and any other projects of this nature will all be considered. All disciplines are encouraged to submit material.

This year, we are asking for only action-oriented work, live and/or real-time. We have decided not to host a gallery show full of past events' documentation, but instead to host performances, interventions, games, discussions, and any other events that should be presented in the urban sphere.

We're serious about getting out of the gallery and putting the show back in the streets where it belongs.

More information can be found at http://www.cnuxiv.org).

Neighborhood Coalition Meeting to Draft a Statement on Development to the Mayor

Ok, I'm not 100% clear on this one, but we were told at the Wayland Square meeting last evening that there will be a meeting of many neighborhood groups at the WBNA HQ (1560 Westminster Street) at 5:00 PM tomorrow, Thursday, to draft a singular statement about open space and development to forward to the Mayor.

I read the preliminary draft last night, and it's OK (good statements about wanting to increase density for example, but with later "trap door" modifiers like about only increasing density in neighborhoods after downtown is fully built out).

The WBNA website has nothing about it, so I'll e-mail them to clarify. Until then,

Event: Drafting of unified neighbood opinion about development to forward to the Mayor.

Where: WBNA, 1560 Westminster Street

When: Thursday, March 23rd, 5:00 PM

PS: Apparently there was also some kind of City Planning meeting last night that was open to the public that some of the Wayland members were at. This wasn't in our calendar. Does anyone know what meeting this was?

Isn't there a planting scheduled for Potters Ave this spring, too?

I think Potters is being planted via CDBG funds, not the Neighborhood Planting Program. That means that contractors will furnish and install the trees, rather than have us go out on a saturday and plant them with the neighbors. I do not know any particulars on this planting at this date, however.
